Skip Bertman's old nemesis got fired after 36 years. Mean Gene was maybe the most classless coach since Buddy Ryan, telling one of his pitchers to bean a guy in the on deck circle for timing pitches. The injury ended the kid's career.

LSU beat WSU and Stevenson for their 1st 2 championships in the CWS IN '91 AND '93. Skip had many run ins with Stevenson.

Good riddance Gene.

I hate this wrong board shite. It's LSU related (kind of). Only current LSU coaches and players can be discussed here?

Thanks for the info OP

saw this last night. WSU's email they sent out was awesome.

Paraphrasing... "Coach Stevenson was fired, he did not resign, he did not retire".

That was it. lol.

that permed moustache of his is enough to warrant a firing, or at least a suspension.

I never heard that Stephenson told Ben Christensen to throw at Anthony Molina. Is this speculation or has it been reported somewhere?

Without searching for a link, I'm pretty sure it was widely reported, and not denied, that Stevenson told him to do it.

I have read just about every article on this story that I can find since it was so tragic and Ben Christensen is such an arse. I've never seen it reported that Stephenson told him to throw at him in this instance when he was in the on deck circle. Everyone knows that he did code bullshite during games. Everyone also knows that he said some atrocious things defending Ben Christensen after the incident. To say it was widely reported and not denied that Stephenson told Christensen to throw at Molina in the on deck circle is inaccurate. If it has been reported somewhere and someone happens to know where I can read about it, though, I'd appreciate a link.

To support what I've said, here is the comment I've seen that Stephenson made:

quote:

Let me tell you something. Nobody intentionally hit someone else. Hey, we're the ones that got hurt out of the deal. No one directed him to hit anybody. Do you have any idea how stupid that would be on our part?

Anthony Molina (the guy Ben Christiansen hit) is in some trouble.

There is no doubt it came from the top. The pitching coach basically admitted.

quote:

The biggest stain on the legacy of Stephenson and longtime pitching coach Brent Kemnitz was the 1999 incident when WSU ace Ben Christensen beaned Evansville’s Anthony Molina with a warmup pitch while Molina stood in the on-deck circle, 24 feet from home plate. The ball struck Molina above his left eye, breaking bones and permanently damaging his vision. At the time, the Wichita Eagle quoted Kemnitz as saying he taught his pitchers to brush back hitters in that situation.

Let me get this straight....you teach you pitchers to brush back players in the on deck circle? How did this guy not get fired on the spot. And what's worse is this is who they hired as the interim HC.

I thought it was the pitching coach, Kemnitz. He took most of the heat after the incident IIRC

That was my thought too. I thought Kemnitz said something like what bbap quoted that he teaches his guys to not let batters time him. Kemnitz also said he never told them to hit the batter though. As far as I knew, Stephenson put his head in the sand and stonewalled forever. That's why if he finally admitted telling Christensen to do it, I'd like to read the story.
