A few years ago I made a mission that I would learn Panama lick for lick. It took me a couple months but I did it. I havent played in almost 2 years and a few weeks ago I picked up a guitar at a buddie house and could still do it.

Rhythm Guitar tracks in "Hourglass" by Lamb of God and SRV's version of "Voodoo Child". "Still Got the Blues" Gary Moore.

For a sufficiently small value of "play", I can play Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

There's a lot of songs I play that people (chics) enjoy hearing more, but the 2 songs I can think of off the top of my head that I play at get togethers/camping are "46 and 2" and "Over the Hills and Far Away". Those 2 songs tend to get people watching what my fingers are doing and comment on it.

Got any tips for someone like me who's been playing for about a year now. I can progress through all my chords fine, and can rattle off a few scales and licks and play a handful of songs in their entirety but just looking for exercises or advice to get to the next step, TIA

Once you get past chord progression, it's really just a matter of trying to learn simple melodies string picking melodies. Nirvana and Weezer have some easy ones that would be good to start with. Red Hot Chili Peppers "I Could Have Lied" is also a simpler song to start working on picking. I fingerstyle more than I use a pick, but it's all the same for working on your left hand (assuming you are right handed). As you get better at picking riffs/melodies, you'll notice the progression through your hand will start at your pointer finger being the easiest to move to the right string/fret/time. As you need to use each of your other fingers, it gets harder as you move towards you pinky. I'm really good with my pointer, middle, and ring fingers when it comes to solos/melodies....but I have some room to improve on getting better with my pinky. That's usually where my ability to make a song sound good is limited, when a solo requires a lot out of your pinky.
But the only way to get better is to keep working on it. start with easier songs and as you feel your control and use of each of you fingers working together progresses and you can make the easier songs sound good, move on to some harder songs and push your skills a allittle harder to the next step. Even though Allen Iverson doesn't like to talk about it, we talkin' bout practice!
ETA: Been playin about 17ish years. Used to play at the bar back in college with a buddy of mine from time to time. The usual 2 guys on acoustic setup.

Vocals - I Believe In A Thing Called Love - The Darkness
Guitar - Notion - Kings of Leon (not a guitar player)
Bass - Seven Nation Army - White Stripes (not a bass player)
Drums - King of New Orleans - Better Than Ezra (not a drummer)
I can dabble around on most instruments, but I'm a vocalist.

It's super easy, it's also the only song I know on bass. I've literally played bass about 3 times.

Really? That live version?
And the guy who can play SRV's Voodoo Child.. Do you guys mean you can play through the whole song? I guess I'm just skeptical because I never have the attention span to learn a whole song all the way through. I enjoy playing around and can play most anything I try with some practice but I never learn whole songs.
