My brother and family are moving to a new neighborhood in Northwest Arkansas. The lot will back up to a flood plain that borders the white river. I guess a privacy fence, or any other type of actual fence is not in mind at the moment.

Any recommendations on an "invisible fence"? This will be for a full grown doberman, and a couple of smaller dogs fwiw.

I had a large Catahoula Cur years ago.I could not afford a fence, so I went out and bought one of the most expensive IFs I could find (don't remember what brand). Staked out the yard, put out the wire, turned it up. Let the dog out, she started heading towards the fence and i was watching to see what she would do. She ran thru it, yelped and kept going. called her back in she yelped as she crossed the line. Turned it up full, same result. Never paid any attention to it. Brought the thing back got a refund.

i havent told him directly, but I think its got "bad idea" written all over it. Im sure that doberman can take a punch and keep gliding through that bitch like a Clydesdale.

Anyone know if the wire has to be buried? can I run it around a fence, possibly on the middle runner? My damn dogs have started digging out of the yard. I figure with the time to dig and crawl under the fence they will not be able to just "glide through" the pain.

Or maybe I shout just run a hot wire around the bottom of the dang fence.

Too close to the ground, it'll ground itself out.

My buddy has one in his back yard and it helps to control his blue lacy... Notice I said helps. If she sees a deer on the golf course she'll yelp 2 twice and you won't see her again for a few hours.

Use this on my GSPs, they figure it out in 10 minutes and I have never had a problem. Pet safe has a new system where you can input custom boundries wirlessly, but it costs about 700$

I assume you're kidding.

I searched for and found this thread because I have same questions as OP--any more serious answers from people who actually installed one and TRAINED their dog(s) to stay in it--it takes real training. you don't just stick your dog out in the yard and hope for the best.

I have two 50-60 lb dogs who love to be outdoors. They stay at my gf's house most of the time with a privacy fence. Want to keep them at my house more often but don't want to build a fence. They're easily trained dogs, but they both LOVE to chase squirrels, cats, chipmunks, possums, raccoons, etc. I'm a little worried that even with extensive training, the right critter will entice them to break the line.

I had one when my Maltese was young. Got it at Home Depot. I buried the wire about 6" with a shovel. Worked like a charm. It cut her a flip first time she tested it and that was the end of that. She's 12 now and still doesn't even think about leaving the yard.

Growing up I had a Boston Terrier that would do the exact same thing. There was no training or stopping him. He had to get every squirrel in the woods.

Had one called PetSafe. No wire, just a box generating the juice to activate the collar. Had two labs on this system, worked good until the older one starting losing her hearing and the pup (which was a stubborn bitch) just decided to bull their way through the pain.

No more dogs stayin in the vicinity....

There is a company called Dog Guard that has installers in many states including Arkansas. It is a wired system so it is capable of doing larger areas with multiple collars. I have over an acre fenced in and it works great as long as you keep the batteries working in the collars.

Go here LINK and research. Their customer service is awesome. I fenced in 3 acres and this LINK keeps my GSP in the yard. You will need to train them for about a week but it stops my dog from chasing squirrel and deer. One piece of advice though is to get some 14 gauge wire instead of the 20 gauge that is supplied. Much better signal and less chance of breakage. I think I ordered my wire from Seminole Wire Company
