Mast rake 28' 4-1/2"
Forestay tension 120 lbs.
Shroud tension 300 lbs.

Is the shroud tension a problem? If so how can I correct it without changing the mast rake and forestay tension?

Do you feel better about yourself because we chose not to race this particular sailboat & you can come here and ask rhetorical questions? Thats cute. I love saling like I enjoy mountain biking but flying scots are the road bikes of the water arrogant annoying & rude.

Hahah spoken like one of the many people I've seen damn near shite their pants and fear for their lives at barely beyond normal heel and nowhere near 8 mph. And lets get real here, if I throw you a rope and you can't tie a bowline in about three seconds, you really don't have a say in boat matters anyway amongst people who can.

As for a flying scot. I got nothing. But those tension weights sound WAYYYYYYYYYYYY too much to me.

As far as raking the mast, I'd just figure out how much rake you need, then put a weight on the main halyard and watch it work back down the boom as I tensioned the backstay. Go stand up next to the mast and center the weight and measure where it is. I assure you, somebody has that measurement. Then make them kinda just twang when you pluck them.

In a boat that light, you just need to get it there where it will hold but that's about it. Take it out and sight up the track and see if it looks about right. This ain't machinery. If your mainsail is bagged or new or the wind is too strong or too light, all that shite is variable anyway. You'll have to play with it to see what actually works best. And just because some guy on the internet swears it's got to be X, don't mean shite to a sailboat. There's more art there than engineering on the older boats. Especially once they and their sails have some miles on them. Once you learn to go fast, you'll be adjusting that shite on the fly anyway.

Thank you, Faxis. I used the North Tuning Guide. The mast rake and forestay tension are spot on for a snug rig, but the shrouds worry me.

How so? Too loose and running out of threads? Or just don't know how they should be tuned?

I know the shroud tension is way too tight, I can't remember the other #'s bc I try not to race the flying sidewalks.

If I do race them I let the other guys tune them up.

I like blow boats, I actually know how to sail a simple rig but I never did the high performance stuff.

My favorite thing to do in one is to set sail and kick back with some bikini clad women and some margaritas. I don't race 'em.

Yeah that's my kind of sailing although it's usually a couple of other scruffy old dudes and beer and whiskey.

What area are you sailing? I've got mid 60s Flying Scot. Have a lot of fun in that old boat.
