no, the powers of the gov't are not the problem

the problem not enough people pay attention to what the politicians actually do and never demand that serial abusers are ridden out of office and into jail

that really depends on your definition of being "better off" means

i mean we can start with simple things like birth rate, average life epectancy, etc

quote:

You can't just simply say something so all encompassing like that without actual facts and analysis.

i really can't think of a measure that would make our poor better off than in the past

they're fat, they live longer, their babies survive more often, they have access to public education, they have access to public medical care, they have access to the same luxury goods that the rich have, etc

quote:

IMO if the advances of the rich are at the expense of a strong middle class then it is not to the benefit of our society as a whole.

can you define what the "middle class" is, and what a "Strong" middle class is?

quote:

I'd rather pay $1 more for the widget Fat Cat makes in the US

you would. the vast majority of people (especially the poor) wouldn't

if it means less adults are going to end up in shite arse jobs like Wal Mart

wal-mart isn't that bad of a job...especially an entry level job

quote:

where they will purposely keep your hours low to avoid paying insurance and encourage you to get on welfare.

sounds like government should stop providing welfare or creating the incentive to link insurance to employment

Of course the government is unethical. That's why John Locke published his works and we set up a 3 tiered system based on his theories so each branch could check the other.

if the federal government didn't have expansive taxation powers, how could "big corporations" manipulate the tax scheme?

the only way to remove this power is to...remove the power

Every class we have lives better than it has in the past.

Problem is, some will never be happy until they are all equal, which is a subjective thing.

ESPN lays off people, and some get all pissed off. Maybe, just maybe...those positions are no longer necessary.

in very general terms I'd say the middle class should be roughly 60% of the population earning the medium salary.

I'm afraid this could go into many pages and while I am enjoying this convo I'll have to hang it up for now.

we will have to agree to disagree but I'll book mark this thread if you really want to keep it up and hopefully my lazy arse will get back to it in the near future.

the median salary in the US is like $45k. most people, in these discussions, consider that unliveable

and as my parting shot, no its not the govt.

its the corporations and the greedy asses who run them who feel absolutely no obligation to making the country better than they left it to the point that they feel the need to subvert the system are the problem.

those same people would still be doing shitty shite and f-ing people over even if the gov't wasn't there to tax them or draw up laws.

I'm sorry but to believe they would stop being nefarious if the bad old gov't just left them alone is naive to the nth degree.

Well, I think its funny that ESPN is trying to take over the TV sports world with SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Much money for broadcast contracts that they will blow themselves up......

It's called corporatism and the govt is very much to blame.

I think maybe ESPN has gone a bit too far, time will tell, but If there was that much money to be made, someone else would be jumping into the fray. ESPN has done a great job at what they do (whether I like it or not) but someone else will step up at some point.

Well with the new tennis contract, an SEC Network, other contracts, and the demands that these increased live sporting events require, they would actually need more employees.

Oh, I know. They'll hire a few hundred kids out of college and pay them shite because they'll take it because you can say you work for ESPN, and then fire them five years later when they realize how woefully underpaid they are.

Man, I remember the early days of ESPN and the shite they would show... Damn near didn't make it, if not for Anheuser Bush.
