Anybody own one or know somebody who does? I've been researching them for a while and it sounds like myself and father are going to build a little house on some spare land we've got in Bellefontaine, OH.

I'm wanting something more organic/structurally sound and from everything I've read and seen, these houses are amazing(and incredibly cheap to build).

They're basically dirt bricks used for building which when constructed are fire/hurricane/earthquake/flood proof and obviously, are free from toxins. They can also be as normal looking as any American home or a bit more creative.

Haven't decided on a design yet(rounded is more secure/structurally safe, but I like the look of a home with right angles). Assuming we'll attach a catch water system as well and try to make this an off the grid home.

Either way, back to the question. Anyone own, know somebody who owns, or personally been into an earthbag home?

Research "Cob home." They're cool. If you have money to burn, read about rammed earth homes. Alt housing is an interest of mine.

Depends. You can build one with your buddies for nothing (~couple grand)

as a house builder, i can see several questions/problems:
what are your fastening points?
insect problems?
mold/mildew?
if you get a chronic leak that goes undetected you may be risking structural failure?
non-hairy females ok with this bc otherwise you got nothing but squatch-woman types ?

I've researched the cob homes as well. I was leaning towards that style, but the earthbag setup seems a little sturdier.

I could be wrong in that assessment though.

Google earthship house yet?

Also screw doing it by hand, you need a excavator to do it efficiently.
