Lawn issue: dead grass base

My yard hasn't been looking as good as it has in the past and I've noticed what seems to be a layer of dead grass down on the dirt. This is odd considering I bag almost every time I cut.

A) what could be causing this
2) what can I do to remove this dead grass layer and rejuvenate my lawn?

Is probably thatch, and may be caused by frequent but light watering and over fertilization causing the roots to grow lateral instead of deep, then become damaged by sun and heat

Rent a dethatcher from Home Depot and run it , will Make your lawn look like shite for a few weeks, but then become very healthy

Also stay away from the "Scott's" system and next year only apply a pre emergent weed killer early spring then a variety specific fertilizer after green up is complete

Cut your grass at a high setting on your mower

Take a soil sample and send to LSU

^^
That.
Also, core aerification puts enzymes from the soil onto the surface that help deteriorate thatch quicker.

Are these two things something that can be done right now or is this a fall/spring kinda deal?

I agree but why are you bagging ? That went out a long time ago and don't fertilize with high nitrogen fake fertilizers? You are bagging your fertilizer.

I bag because I hate grass clippings.

Riding or pushing? In either case, put a mulching blade on your mower. If you have one and it's not doing the trick, sharpen it.

Riding. I have a 42" deck mower with bagger setup. I just don't like walking in my yard and having clippings stick to my feet and track all over my patio and into my house.

Just cut it on the highest setting every 3 days. You won't have much clippings and your lawn will look better.

In a perfect world, I would. But cutting twice a week just isn't feasible. I'm talking about 1/2 acre here.

I cut an acre of mine every 3-4 days. You have lights on that mower boy?

well clealy you have nothing else to do. I'm not trying to be a dick but the answer of cutting every three days wouldn't work for nearly anyone.

You are right. My 3 kids, tball team, dance lessons, fishing and drinking habits, 2 jobs, and tomato farm don't keep me busy enough I guess.

I'm not being an ass. Well, I am now, but I wasn't before. You want help with the lawn or not?

Maybe the over fertilization. But light and frequent watering is a myth. Roots don't care.

Turf makes thatch. Nothing you can do. Grass clippings play no role in it. Verticut too deep now and you may kill it.
