Tax Title & License Cost

How do I calculate Tax Title and License for a new car purchase in Louisiana? And is any of that negotiable?

Trying to get all my ducks in a row and know exactly what i'm looking at cost wise before negotiating. I have a firm grip on the price I want and think I will get. But, trying to calculate TTL before going in and wondering if this is negotiable like the car price.

It's not negotiable, but IDK how it's calculated

I think the negotiating is more between who pays TTL. Sometimes the salesmen can use this as a negotiating tool for them. About as much as I know...

like 9%. give or take.

Title is Notary fees which vary depending on where you go, unless it's a new car, then they just charge a standard fee (set by dealer). Not negotiable. But in private party it is.

You just tell the seller to say a different price.

...Title and License should be less than $100 for private sale or transfer, meaning private or personal auto.

If you're trading a car in, the value of your old car is taken off the top of your taxable purchase.

Yeh I was just giving a rough estimate.

If you are worried about the price of title and lic. you prob shouldn't buy a car

I'm not worried about the cost of TTL, but thank you for your concern in my financial situation. I just want to go in knowing what it should be around and not getting taken to the cleaners. They could say it's $10 or $10,000 , I have no idea.

Now I have an idea, 2,400 for every 30k, that gives me an idea so i don't get worked over on this issue.

Tax is just like sales tax on anything else you buy, it is calculated at the rate for the parish you live in regardless of where you buy at, and as stated earlier if you are trading in a vehicle, you get to reduce your taxable amount by the trade in price...IE

$30,000 negotiated sales price of new vehicle

$10,000 dollar trade in

then you would pay your parish rate on the difference of $20,000

in Ascension it is 8.5% so tax would be $1,700

Title should be negligible and around $200

As an aside, some will or wont list dealer fees when negotiating.

I'm negotiating right now online for a Mazda, and am having little luck.

This isn't completely true. It might be for a vehicle, but not for other goods. If I go to Best Buy on the Northshore, they won't ask me what parish I live in to charge me that parishes sales tax. I will get charged St Tammany Parish Tax

unless you get whatever you buy at best buy delivered to your house, then you would pay the tax rate of where it is delivered (considered the transfer of title location)....for a car it is considered where the vehicle is titled

All you said was when you buy anything, you didn't say if you have it delivered. Was just pointing out that it is different with a vehicle.

What is the tax on undercoating and window etching?

If they do charge tax directly to those, I would assume the dealership uses it's own parish tax. If it is added into the purchase price of the vehicle, then the parish you register it in.
