Reading that whole thing it's obvious the guy is guessing and using snippets of info as his sources.

Ryan said they'll look at Smith at OLB but never said he was moving to it full time. Pretty sure that will be a situational thing.

He also used a TP article that was guessing where they had competitions that claim that Vaccaro was competing with Harper. As to this point nothing has been said about direct competition and evidence actually points more to him playing FS as Payton said Jenkins could move to nickel when he comes in.

They also used a comment about Hicks primarily being a NT but playing both that and DE to project him more as a NT(though did say his value would be at DE for fantasy purposes). We have since drafted Jenkins and I think that will likely move Hicks more to being the primary back up DE with Jenkins being the primary back up NT.

Edit:
I see Soph already said as much also.

I actually thought we'd seen Harper at LB before we saw a dlineman. Just my speculation with the drafting of Vaccaro and Harper is actually a decent outside pass rusher and horrible in coverage. His neck has already moved to LB'er

Good lord. You people act like we have 4-5 legitimate proven OLB's on our team. They are all unproven at this point, including Will Smith. This is a lot of freaking out over nothing. September is still a few months away, maybe they trim him down hard.

Cool straw man bro.

Converting an old, overweight defensive end who's never played linebacker in his career is just a bad idea.

Most likely it was just PFF talking out of their arse, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

I fail to see why trying a player, who is not good enough to play DE in a 3-4 scheme, at a different position is such a massive omgwtfsostoopid deal.

Well he's actually played some snaps in the 3-4 formation under GW. He's never played as a stand up linebacker. So...you're wrong.

No one is freaking out like you're implying, I think everyone is just very very surprised to see this

I posted that around draft time. Rob Ryan was on WWL and when he named all the linebackers he listed Will Smith as one of them.

PFF is good for reviewing. They are good for snap counts & production evals during those snap counts, that may shed light on a player you originally thought under-performed or that you originally thought was a baller until you looked at the data of a certain year.

They are not really good at projections. Ex: Aubrayo Franklin & Broderick Bunkley were practically at the top of PFF's FA DT lists in their respective years. (Thankfully, Franklin is no longer here, and the other may soon be replaced by a draft pick.)

Which brings me to my main critique of this poorly written projection: they don't even mention John Jenkins in their DL projection.

Exactly.

I like their data aggregation, but their analysis leaves a lot to be desired.

Aubrayo Franklin in the correct scheme is an animal, Bunkley is fricking disgusting against the run.

I'll admit, I'm a PFF fanboy though.

he gained weight and it's only been since the end of the 2011 season that he has actually played a little bit of 3-4DE. He's NEVER touched OLB because he's too god damn fat. 300+lbs remember that

so 3-4DE is more probable than him playing 3-4OLB

I like doing my own projections anyway

where is the fun in putting faith in some else's opinion or thoughts instead of doing it on your own?

I read their reviews after the games and they can be good at times. Like last year, they shed some light on why Bunkley didn't play as much. He just wasn't in there in the nickel defense and that was when our defense tended to give up a lot of running yards.

But in the base 4-3, he was in there. When we played the 49ers, he played a lot more snaps. It pretty much had to do with the formations they were running. The 49ers like to run the ball a lot so they had a lot of 2 TE looks and other heavy personnel sets.

the defense didn't really have a bad game vs. the 49ers either. Turnovers pretty much killed us in that one.

People have so little knowledge about some of the positions in this new defense. Just because he's playing with his hands up doesn't mean he'll be playing your true 3-4 OLB position.

Many 3-4 defenses (Saban loves doing this) will shift into fronts with essentially 4-3 DEs playing in a two-point stance at the OLB position in obvious run downs.

That's all this is IMO.
