Never been. Got invited to go in a few weeks. Have the option of renting a canoe or kayak. Day trip, no camping. What equipment/apparel do I need? Any other suggestions for a newbie?

For a day trip, all you need is a snack and drinks. I'd recommend a dry bag for a change of clothes. Just dress according to weather. It will be cool on the water, but paddling will warm you up.
Just remember to check before you jump if that's your thing.

Buy plenty of beer before you get there.

NO GLASS
Also, if you partake in any other intoxicating activities, avoid them for the day. Green jeans and local LE are active out there.

Agree Green Jeans are very strict, make sure you follow every regulation they enforce everything down to the minor detail.
Like it was said earlier buy your beer before you go, mostly dry counties out there.
For fishing I like to use small crawfish plastics, small crank baits (2-6' divers), and spinner baits. I would also use flouro/mono since the water is clear. If you use braid you may want to tie on a flouro/mono leader.

Take some time to research the applicable rules/regs.
- In a kayak/canoe, all food must be in a sealed cooler/ice chest - an ice chest without a latch won't work, you'll need to bungee it.
- Drinks MUST be in a FOAM koozie - it has to be able to float your beer if it falls in the water
- Each kayak/canoe must have a trash bag or some place to put your trash so that in the event of a flip you don't trash up the river. We use crawfish sacks and just make sure to cinch them tight.
Pretty much everything needs to be bungeed down/strapped down. The goal of must of these regs is to avoid littering in the river.

Going this weekend. If you put in at the Crazy Horse we will be the people on the bluff across the river chilling with the crazy kid playing "Dueling Banjos" as you pass.

Appreciate all the good advice! So shorts and a t-shirt is fine?
ETA: what about going barefoot or use water shoes?

Use water shoes or a pair of old running shoes or something that you don't mind getting wet. When you flip your canoe, you don't want to be fighting to flip it over being barefoot.

Yeah, you never know what is on the bottom, so shoes are always smart unless on a known shallow.
When we went, we saw a bunch of little trout, but couldn't get any of them to so much as turn towards a bait.

Where can I find out more info on this place? Or does anyone want to provide details in this thread?
I've been looking for somewhere I can go on a day trip in my kayak and catch fish.

I'm assuming the Buffalo River in AR, not TN correct?

Old tennis shoes that you don't care about and plenty of bungee straps. Paddle in the rear of the group if you are going in a group and harvest beer lost from your buddies that forgot bungee straps.

This also helps you learn "what not to do" in the chutes. If two canoes end up lodged in a tree, do not follow. It will end the same way.

Hmm, it will be for me. Don't assume everyone is from Baton Rouge!
