Lake Charles Man Struck By Lightning, Now Brain Dead

LINK
Man, this has me down hearing about this

Leaving behind a wife and 3 kids

quote:

Menard was fishing with his brother-in-law, Pete, Friday morning at Lacassine Wildlife Refuge when the storm moved in to the east.

quote:

"Pete was operating the motor and heard the thunder. When he turned around, he saw Cleve laying backwards with half his body in the water. At first, he didn't know what was wrong ... and he questioned him and then he saw his eyes roll back in his head and he knew something was wrong," said Menard.

quote:

Cleve was taken to American Legion Hospital in Jennings and later transferred to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. On Friday and Saturday, he was in and out but still responding. Family members said he suffered several strokes overnight and doctors declared him brain dead Sunday morning.

ETA - should I remove this for privacy even if it's on the news?

American Legion Hospital in Jennings? He had no shot if he was sent there first.

I'm not trying to be sick with this but I'm amazed he didn't hear the lighting hit. I had lighting hit a tree 10-20 feet from me some years back and it was one of the loudest things I have ever heard. Sounded like 10 cannons firing at the same time mixed with the loudest cracking sound

I'm really not sure why they went fishing Friday morning. There were severe thunder storms all night Thursday.

May be worth noting, they were trying to get to safety when it happened, them, with a slew of other boats were trying to get to shelter when it hit.

he died and they revived him in the boat and airlifted him out at the launch.

also, this is the second time said gentleman has been struck by lighting......

Help me figure out why there were multiple boats on the water Friday. It was a shite storm Thursday night. I was up for a few hours due to the thunder/lightning.

I saw some old guy fishing under the Basin bridge Friday morning as the storms were passing and thought how foolish he was given all the electricity in those storms. You can't fix stupid.

I have 2 head scratchers on this one..

1. He was airlifted to JENNINGS? WTF? Is there a gas usage moratorium on those choppers now? A better initial treatment center plus the lost time in travels to Jennings first could have possibly saved him.

2. No lightning expert here, but why didn't it get the second buy in the same boat? Did it travel thru the throttle cable from the motor and get him because he was touching the throttle?

Jennings was the closest treatment center.

Not by much....maybe 3 miles closer. (depending on where they docked)

But they "airlifted" him out. That means it was about 2 minutes further to fly into Lake Charles.

Grew up around there. IF they were south of Lacassine, Jennings (on I10) is 14 miles from Lacassine and Lake Charles is about 16! I imagine they were docked somewhere off of LA 14 which is a straight shot into south Lake Charles (if driving).
