re: Greenpeace founder on today's environmentalism

quote:

As Patrick Moore, a co-founder of Greenpeace, explains, the ‘80s ushered in the age of environmental extremism. The basic issues, for which he and Greenpeace fought, had largely been accomplished, and the general public was in agreement with the primary message. In order for the environmentalists to remain employed, they had to adopt ever more extreme positions. Moore says: “What happened is environmental extremism. They’ve abandoned science and logic altogether.” Their message today is “anti:” anti-human, anti-science, anti-technology, anti-trade and globalization, anti-business and capitalism, and ultimately, anti-civilization.”

Pleasantly surprised to see this

You see it a lot today. People want to keep control and be important even after they get or accomplish what they want.

PETA was founded in 1980. It got in on the ground floor of the crazy this guy is talking about. While PETA isn't exactly and environmental organization it cut from the same cloth as organizations like ELF.

I always wanted to see PETA throw paint on some leather wearing bikers or some Fur wearing pimp instead of old rich white women. I wonder how long they would continue to do if such a scenario happened?

All activist organizations go this route once heir goal is achieved. In order to stay rlelevant they have to champion another cause. Look at MoveOn.org, for instance. The point of MoveOn was to move on beyond the Billy Jeff impeachment. The impeachment happened, Billy Jeff is no longer president yet there's still a MoveOn. What are they moving on from?

Susan B Komen Foundation is another example of this. Started as breast cancer awareness and the founder was run out on a rail after she no longer wanted to give money to planned parenthood.

The way I see it, if you are hearing somebody's opinion, chances are it's paid for. An unbiased observer will never have an outlet to get his opinion out.

A person being paid for by the nuclear industry (NEI) or greenpeace is being paid to be heard, and those groups have the money to make sure it happens. At the same time, sometimes only a professional really understands the whole picture, and those professionals will get paid.

Same for the founder of MADD. She's on record about how far overboard MADD the war on drunk driving is now.
