LETS GO DOWN MEMORY LANE: revisiting the Pistons run from the 2000s

We basketball braintrust over on the Hornets Talk/Pelican Perch are discussing how we would like the team's foundation for the future established, and it got me thinking about the Pistons.
Billups - "Mr. Big Shot" certainly held up his name during some of these playoff series. Ice watr running through his veins, and really managed the offense well.
Hamilton - really solid 2 guard who played well off of Billups.
Prince - wasn't really relied on for offense, rather was a pretty good lockdown defender with his lankiness and athleticism.
R. Wallace - good defending 4 that could also stretch the floor and cause matchup problems for whoever was guarding him. Knocked down many a long range shot when it counted. Also provided a lot of that "bad-boy" spark and antagonism that got under opposing teams.
B. Wallace - one of the best defnding centers of that time, overshadowed by Shaq for much of his prime. What else needs to be said other than multiple Defensive Player of the Year 4/5 years during their run.
Not many people gave them a shot when they made it to the Finals to play the Lakers, with their big name superstars (Kobe, Shaq, Malone, Payton) coming off of a recent 3-peat. It was a classic O v D matchup and the media annointed the Lakers champs before the series began. Detroit went on to win the Finals 4-1, bringing an end to the recent Laker dominance and sending the Lakers to three pretty shitty seasons.
Here is a rundown of their seasons:
2002 - conf semis
2003 - con finals
2004 - WON NBA finals
2005 - NBA Finals (took the Spurs to 7 games)
2006 - conf finals (took eventual champs Miami to 6 games)
2007 - conf finals (took Lebron and Cleveland to 6 games)
2008 - conf finals (took eventual champs Boston 6 games)

It was amazing what Ben Wallace did to Shaq in that finals.

Watching them and looking back they seemed much better than just two Eastern Conference Championships.
ETA: Rewatching game 5 of the '04 Finals, "Bryant needs to distribute the ball and the game will come to him." Some things never change

The Pistons also had a very good bench, led by Memo Okur and Corliss Williamson. Lindsey Hunter and Mike James were lockdown perimeter defenders. The Pistons' defense was absolutely nasty.

Just think if they had drafted:
Melo
Bosh
Wade
David West
Josh Howard
instead

One could make a compelling case of each of these players being the most critical toward their championship run. Not sure the NBA will see another championship starting 5 like that.

Anybody think they would have been better off keeping Okur and letting Sheed go?

Quite possibly the most boring NBA Finals ever. I don't think anyone wanted that series to go 5 games much less 7.

The Big Nasty. Shaq should remember him from his days playing college ball. I still have a Williamson Pistons Jersey.

Not me, even though as the years went on, Sheed got lazier and lazier, slowly drifting to the perimeter. But man, was he focused during the championship run.
I'll never forget when they traded for Sheed. It was rumored as happening for so long. I was in a computer class at Western Michigan University. Half of the class kept refreshing their ESPN.com page to see if this trade went through. Finally, we saw it as completed, and half of the class went nuts, starting screaming, high-fiving, etc, right in the middle of class. The Professor stopped class to ask what the heck was going on, some dude next to me in the back row yelled "We got Sheed." The Professor walked to the back row, started scrolling through ESPN.com, giving everyone high-fives, all pumped up.
Yeah, CSB. The rest is history, and that's a moment I will never forget.

Sheed was their most talented player, he left a ton on the table (more than Shaq did).

If they didn't win that title, they would have been the Eagles of the NBA.
