We have a 6ft wood fence that faces a street and we would like to put some shrubs or trees along the fence line for privacy. Anything that will grow from 6-10ft will do. Any suggestions on what shrubs would be a good fit? The fence line is about 40ft across.

The fence is solid?

You need something higher than the fence?

Red tip photinas grow like crazy in south LA. They will get over 6'. May take a few years.

I planted four sweet viburnum (viburnum odoratissimum) for the same purpose this time last year. They were all three gallon plants and they're already 4-5 feet tall. You can let them grow as bushes or cut them as hedges. Impossible to kill and they're evergreens. Will grow to 10-15 ft easy but you can cut them back all you want.

Here's a pic (not my yard).

I have some wax-leaf ligustrums (sp?) I like. The waxy leaf protects it from a lot of fungal sickness, etc.

Horrible if anyone in your family has allergies. Down to my last few on side of house, wife has been sneezing non stop for 2 days now. The husquvarna will be doing the last few in. I have the red tips, mine got big but if you stay on top of the trimming annually they bush out well.

Pampas grass.
Ligustrum

Pampas grass can get unruly so be careful with how many you plant.

Don't do red tip photinias - there is a fungal disease going around killing them. I have lost 4 in the last 1.5 years and many nurseries no longer carry them for this reason.

We have a similar situation with a chain link fence and decided to go with eleagnus (commonly called silverberry). They are fast growing and will cover the fence entirely in 3-4 years. Plant on 5' centers. They love sunlight.

If your fenceline is heavily shaded, try cylera japonica instead. These will grow a little slower than eleagnus, but will thrive in the shade.

Good gawd. You ain't lying. I bought a house once from an old lady that let it run wild. I took me two years with an ax and pickax to get rid of it all.

Sadly, this is exactly my situation. I bought this house that had a forest of bamboo in the backyard. I'm currently on month 6 and down about $3k trying to get rid of it all. I will freakin hate bamboo for the rest of my life. I spent the entire weekend digging trenches in front of the fence line so that I can dig out as many roots as possible coming up under the fence, and now I'm installing some wooden barriers about 12 inches below the rot board to try and keep it out going forward...

...which brought me to this question. I figured while I have the trenches dug, I may as well figure out what new shrubs to plant there. So thanks for the responses, I'm going to look into some of these options and see what we might like.
