I have to fight off a lot of pessimism, but I really think it is released late 2014. We know he already had 200 pages done before he even started, carrier over from dance. That left ~1300 pages to go. He still has a lot of time in 2013, so I can realistically see this happening next year sometime.

New to the series? Sorry, I can have nothing but pessimism at this point. There's no way he lives to finish it.

That sounds about what I was guessing, Mr. Wayne. As far as I know his only other big project, The World of Ice and Fire, is supposed to come out later this year so I would think 2014 would be the year for WoW. Fingers crossed.

Well, he didn't start working on WoW until January right? I know he said he was going to take a few months off after Dance came out.

And he's got tons of side projects. Scripts, anthologies, WildCards...and he travels to about 15 conventions, and HE DOES NOT WRITE WHILE OUT OF TOWN. He will only write on this old /dos computer or something, so he doesn't work at all while at conventions, which is about 20% of the year.

You can't possibly have lived through the wait for AFFC and then the insane wait for Dance to be that optimistic.

Unless someone else is doing the actual day to day writing (his former assistant Ty), and then he just edits and adds details, there is no way on earth he's done in enough time for it to be edited and put to print in 2014.

Child actor aging issues.

Eehh, not really. I think the next two seasons will be the biggest issue, not beyond Season 5. The girl who plays Sansa is almost 18, and I really don't think Arya will grow that much bigger. Bran is really the only character I'm concerned with in that regard.

It would be a problem with Actors contracts. Basically these actors/actresses need to be committed to this for a decade. Bran/Arya/Sansa are going to start looking old really soon.

Sansa I think is already in her prime basically. She's taller than basically every other actress on the show already. I don't think Masie will grow that much taller. Bran could definitely be an issue though since his voice just dropped, but the biggest issues with that will happen in the next 3 seasons, not beyond.

IIRC, the makers of the show have said they will not wait on Martin to finish shite and the aging child actors was their main reason plus the possible loss of interest in the show if it were to break for a season or more.

I.E. it is known.

Also, according to wiki, he had 400 pages done in October 2012, 200 of which were "complete". Estimated the length to be about 1500 pages. So...long way to go.

Martin blows. He says he won't work strictly on one project. Someone needs to remind this a-hole why he's wealthy.

Hey at least I know who is getting married at the Red Wedding. But seriously not in the least bit new here.

I'm on the fence here. The only way he can finish it is if he is able to get Dany here with her Army and Jon resurrected, if that is even his plan, by the end of Winds. So he would need to finish Winds by 2014 and then have a 3-5 year window to finish A Dream of Spring. I think he has enough gas in the tank for this. If he extends it to 8 books, no way in hell he finishes. I think a serious problem he is having with Winds is trying to bring everything together for the final showdown of Dream.

He could also choose not to attend every convention invited to, or if he does, actually work while he's at the convention. But he won't.

He's enjoying his life. I can't fault him for that, but the glacial pace is annoying.

400 pages from Jan 2012 to October 2012 is 50 pages a month. If he continues at the pace, he would have written another 300 pages since then putting him about half way. 30 months total needed to complete the story roughly. Starting Jan 2012 he would finish June 2014 with a Nov/Dec 2014 release. Winds of Winter to come out in the Winter? Personally I think he speeds up too.

Agreed.

At least the show writers have an idea of where to go in case GRRM dies or never finishes the series.

This. I am counting the 200 from Dance because he had to go back and tweak them to make sure they flowed with Winds instead of Dance. And also because it fits my agenda of it being released in 2014.
