Crossbows

Was looking into buying one for the upcoming deer season in Alabama. Which one would you guys recommend for between $200-400?

At that price point you'll be unhappy with the product. Spend a minimum of 500. I shoot a 10 Point Titan XL and love it. Mine cost 550 + cocking mechanism and new graphite bolts and broadheads (100 total). Good luck, try and shoot some before u buy, you'll know the one you want by the feel and fit.

I'll admit that I use one some. But I have a bad shoulder from football and all kinds of manly shite. And nerve damage in my right hand from hand surgery.
Not to mention those damn things are almost like having a rifle!

It depends. What kind of wheelchair do you have? You'll want one that's sized to fit your chair.

I'd rather someone tell me they want one for use in their neighborhood at night, out of season, than for use during regular bow season. I can at least respect an honest outlaw. Not saying I don't respect a healthy man using one during regular bow season, I just don't see why you'd do it if you weren't starving.

Cuz they're legal. I got my first one after i separated my shoulder in the 10th grade the night before the opening day of archery. All that prep and work down the shitter. I keep both, that way if my arm is killing me, I can still hunt. I actually don't think it's much easier than killing one with my compound. You get a little more range. The biggest thing for novices is you don't have to practice. I would rather someone kill a deer with a crossbow than wound a bunch with a compound.

I agree it is better for novices, but I would much rather those folks put in the time and learn how to become a hunter rather than all of a sudden one day go buy a crossbow and start tromping through the woods during bow season. I see it all the time. Someone who's never hunted decides to buy a crossbow to take advantage of the new regs, then gets disgusted because he can't kill a deer. All the while spooking deer daily. I know many of us were fortunate and had fathers, grandfathers, uncles and such to teach us at a young age. Some guys didn't, and get in the game late in life after watching a lot of TV and reading the LA Sportsman magazines. I wouldn't tell a man not to try it, but the ones like my next door neighbor who decided to get a crossbow last year and put himself and his wife and 2 kids in a pop-up blind on public land drive me nuts. He won't take any advice because someone at church or in a magazine says otherwise. In my opinion these are the people crossbows should be restricted from.

Man, I coulda warned ya- I asked a similar question in here a few months ago, I'll never look at a crossbow the same way again. Nor will i ever buy one.

That applies to all forms of deer hunting!
The problem is too many people are "shooters" and not "hunters". I got friends that think I'm crazy to scout as much as I do. I've explained to them that the fun for me is in the hunt, not just the kill. Of course, it's also why I kill two nice bucks every year. I've taught my wife, daughters and nephews to hunt the same way. It took my forever to convince my nephews that it's more of an accomplishment to kill deer withing 20 yds than taking pot shots down a powerline. Posted on 5/3/13 at 8:09 am to tenfoe

Correct, I personally have a problem with healthy grown men using crossbows as introductory weapons in deer hunting. I'm not at LDWF lobbying to outlaw crossbows though. If you want to do it fine, just don't ask me for help.

Honestly, anything that gets more people into hunting is good for us in the long run. Yes, I hate some of the dumbasses that venture into the woods, but I do my best to educate them on hunting "right". The left would love to ban hunting. So, the more we have on our side the better. Every family has it's share of dumbasses.
