Hornets would trade out of #1 spot

quote:

The big news here is this: Sources around the NBA have told SheridanHoops that if the Orlando Magic or New Orleans Hornets win the lottery, they both would be strongly inclined to trade the pick to whichever fellow lottery team wants to pay the most for the right to draft Nerlens Noel.

The caveat For Orlando is that it does not want to lose out on Ben McLemore of Kansas, whom it covets the most, or Trey Burke/Viktor Oladipo as a fallback. And it’s not that the Magic don’t like Noel. Rather, they don’t need him, already in possession of a top-tier NBA center on a rookie contract in two-year veteran Nikola Vucevic. Same with the Hornets and Anthony Davis.

...5. New Orleans Hornets – Trey Burke, PG, Michigan

No chance the Hornets pass on Burke. New Orleans’ experiment with Austin Rivers at PG did not work. With Rivers and Eric Gordon, the Hornets are deep at SG and can even entertain trade offers for Gordon, who is signed to a massive extension.

With Anthony Davis looking like a future All-Star, the Hornets need to surround him with a real point guard that will give Davis easy scoring opportunities. No disrespect to Greivis Vasquez, but Burke will be much better. Just look at how he helped Tim Hardaway and Glenn Robinson III at Michigan this past season. Burke is quick and can blow by just about any player in the NBA and also is a tremendous passer.

I thought the knock on Burke was that he small and slow.

Yeah, the draft reports on him are kind of conflicting, how can you have elite quickness on offense but not defense?
quote:

Strengths: A solid lead guard with great speed. Excels at running the pick-and-roll. Can create for himself as well as his teammates. Plays smart and tough. Noticeably improved after passing on going pro last year.

Weaknesses: On the smaller side for a point guard. Doesn’t finish around the rim consistently. Has trouble keeping quicker players in front of him on defense.

I guess it could be a basketball IQ/technique issue and not a speed issue.

I'll bet its more speculation than an "inside source" that we would trade the #1. Speculation because we have AD.

What would we even get? It doesn't happen that often, and I'm sure we wouldn't want to trade down very far.

And we take Burke if we're picking 5-7 and he's there.

He's poking fun at a certain know it all blogger who thinks the general defensive philosophy of the team means there's a 0% chance they draft Burke.

I'm not sure what we could get. A vet player? Swap 1sts and pick up a 1st next year? Has anyone ever traded the 1st overall pick before?

If Dell doesn't see much separation in the top 5 I could see something like swapping with Phoenix and picking up their #30 pick.

The Magic traded Chris Webber to the Warriors for #3 (Penny Hardaway) and 3 future 1sts.

sigh

Yea let's pass on the only legitimate all-star caliber talent in the draft to get some scrub later

I doubt they'd trade #1 for the hell of it, they'd trade it because it has value. I only mentioned Phoenix because I can't see any of the bottom feeders giving up the few good players they have for Noel and Phoenix is the only bottom team with an extra 1st. I'd imagine the asking price would be quite high, just look at the Webber/Penny trade.

I hope so

If not we better sit tight.

A Davis/Noel front court would be insane in 2-3 years
