Rufus Johnson vs Chase Thomas

Rufus drafted (6th rd, I know) on pure potential; but we don't have the slightest clue if he will make the 1st cut.
Chase went undrafted completely despite a stellar career; hell he was All American in 2011. I guess the knock is- he's max'ed out his physical potential... but damn, he seems like a safe (if unspectacular) prospect to draft in the middle rounds and stick at OLB for a few seasons. Seems like the type of guy who wouldn't wow you, but not make you worry about replacing for awhile.
It seems like these 2 are total opposites; Thomas being the safe pick who starts first, and Rufus being the potential freak athlete you'd want to eventually take over.
Anyone hearing why Thomas dropped completely out of the draft?

Probably for the reason you mentioned. Once you get into the 5th-7th rounds teams start drafting on potential much more than how well they did in college.
Once he fell too far it's easy to see why he went undrafted.

I was a little upset at the Rufus pick with some other talent that I had heard of still on the board. I liked Cornelieus Washington and that ILB from Rutgers... Hope this guy develops alright

when I heard we signed him, I thought it was a joke. I assumed he was drafted on Friday.

I've looked at his highlites (chase) and read 2011 and 2012 reviews and still can't see why he dropped. My favorite UDFA pick. Long arms non stop motor very smart 6'4" 247.

He doesn't look too slow on his highlights...just like JJ doesn't look slow on his film. Some guys just have game speed and I think Thomas is one of those guys.

IDK if Thomas is completely maxed out but he's not a spectacular athlete so that's definitely why he fell in a deep draft.
Kevin Reddick too. But I expect both will be solid pros tbh. They have talent.
Reddick especially will succeed here imo. He's an inside linebacker that can rush the passer and he's coming to a scheme where the DC uses his inside linebackers to rush the passer quite a bit. it's a nice fit.

LBs unless possessing some particular special skills will always be downgraded in comparative value.
Ogletree, Teo, Minter, Alonso may all be perenial All Pros or make the HOF but it rare for LBs outside of 34OLB pass rushers to be drafted in the first half of Round 1. The same principle is pushed all the way down the board. Most every year you can find a LBs with 4th or 5th Rd grades that do not get drafted at all. Just the nature of the position in value.
Did ya'll hear Stanford Coach Shaw on nfln? He spoke specifically of Thomas in how being undrafted would be to his benefit over being drafted. I'm sure he had multiple offers from different teams. He chose the one where he would have the best chance to compete and contribute. Out with the Casillas, Shanle, and maybe more to come. Fresh blood in.

He didn't run 4.77. He ran 4.87 and was the slowest OLB at the Combine. Personally I think that shite is overrated and the kid is a football player. Definitely makes the cut.

He might of had a bad 40, but that kid can play football. And that's all that matters to me.

Being a Stanford fan I've watched Chase for the past 4 years. He isnt a freak of nature athlete but the kid was is a hell of a football player and will do great in New Orleans. He has a knack for getting into the backfield and making a big play.
We've had one of the best defenses in the Pac-12 (Not SEC but still) over the last 3-4 years and he was a key reason why. I'm almost positive he'll make the team and hopefully get some snaps next season on the defense.
