New Orleans Saints (Last Year: 7-9)

2013 NFL Draft Individual Grades:

15. Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas: A- Grade
This is a very good pick by a smart team. The Saints had major issues at safety, and Kenny Vaccaro is one of the top players available. With Matt Ryan and Cam Newton in the division, New Orleans absolutely had to upgrade its secondary. Malcolm Jenkins and Roman Harper weren't cutting it.

Good point. It's always better to have more guys running around in the secondary instead of guys running at the qb

Bc we all know this regime has hit home run after home run drafting defensive players in round 1

I was disappointed that they didn't trade back with SF. There is going to be tremendous value in the 2nd round and they needed to be in that mix. On that note, here's one last frick You to Goodell. I guess that little chapter will be officially over when the 2nd round is over.

The pick isn't the one that I would have made, but that doesn't make it a bad pick. They absolutely needed help in the secondary. To the comment on "homerun defensive picks in the first round", I'll concede that point, but this team has been incredible at finding the diamonds in the rough in the later rounds. I will be VERY interested to see what they do this year and I have faith in this FO to make smart moves.

It's not the player, it's where they took him and the money invested in the position already NTM the worst defense ever switching to a 3-4, you take the pass rusher.

It'll never be over. frick Goodell. Forever.

That said, Vaccaro is the pick and that's it. At least we didn't pick a Tenn WR.

I don't see how in the world we couldn't have pulled a trade off with San Fran, they even picked a damn safety

Maybe they wanted Vaccaro and so did the Saints. So trading down wouldn't have helped if this was their guy.

That's kind of the point. SF DID trade up with the Cowboys, so they wanted to move up. I'm sure that the sticking point was that the Saints wanted a 1st and 2nd; the Cowboys ended up settling for a 1st and 3rd.

Still, let's say you lose out on Vacarro to SF with that trade. Eric Reid may have fallen to you at 31 and, as it turned out, Matt Elam was still on the board. They would be sitting pretty with probably just as talented a Safety, plus an extra pick that they desperately needed.

unless you're elite, you don't pick a safety in the first round. it's not a rare-valuable position

It was clear early on that we missed Meach. It was also clear that Brees made him a much better player. But take the money and run. Can't say I blame players like that. I'd probably do it(though not if I played for the Saints).

Arrington was a 7th round pick, not a 1st. Big difference in expectations.

So who should we have taken? By your logic, any defensive player would have been a "home run".

I am a pretty happy guy right now with our pick. Floyd was the only other player I would of liked that was available. I love jones but the injury is a concern. Great pick!

It's kinda hard for Matt Ryan and Cam Newton to throw from their backs. Jones was the pick. Saints fricked up like they ALWAYS do in the first round.
