When buying guns from private sellers how do you know they aren't stolen?

Is there a phone # or site that allows you to check the serial #? Doesn't this concern others on here that buy guns from non-dealers?

Cross you fingers & hope for the best.
You can usually tell by looking at the person. I'd by weary if they pulled up in a cutlass with spinning 22's

It's the same as buying any item (except cars, boats, etc... with a paper trail) - you can never be 100% sure. I won't buy from someone if I get a weird vibe about it.

It's very simply. Ask for the serial numbers... Call local sheriff and they will run the serial numbers for you. I have done this 3x with 3 different law enforcement agencies and they are always happy to help.

I always get a bill of sale where seller signs an agreement t saying firearm is not stolen or used in a crime.
If nothing else it removes any liability from me.

Seriously... Tell the seller you need the serial numbers and you are going to run them to ensure the gun is clean before meeting with him. If he disappears and doesnt respond, probably stolen.
If he gives them to you, its literally a five minute phone call to have them verified.

Allow me to reiterate the SIMPLE part.

Either way, if they were stolen, the police can and will confiscate them from you without reimbursement if they find out.

Not the best practice.

That's why you have the serial number checked ....
before you give money

How do you know a refrigerator, washing machine, pair of shoes, box of ammo, a steak knife isn't stolen?

What is your suggestion?

Yes, and a bill of sale will do nothing.

You buy shoes / steak knives / fridges from private individuals?

I have friends in LE that check for me. Of course, I'm usually buying from one of them.
