A few years ago i worked with an older boat captain who had stories of catching tarpon as a child in front of his grandmothers house inside the Atchafalaya basin.
The guy lives in Franklin, can't remember his name or the location though.

that damn flyfishing article has gone viral and people are getting their panties in a wad all over florida
Because they're Florida tarpon that y'all are murdering and depriving the anglers in FL a chance to catch them.
I wonder how long it will take before some jackass tries to file a lawsuit to prevent spearfishing for tarpon in LA waters?
Got any more links to the whining?

My neighbor caught one about 5 inches in Myrlte Grove canal 2 years ago with a cast net. Dr. Stein is in possession of it.

In this video Rossignol, who owns 5 of the top ten Hells Divers tarpon spear fishing records, drills a triple digit tarpon off a gulf rig.
Get 'em, Rok! Love that video.

That's 81 per year in the entire state. I have seen more than that under one oil rig which was probably destroyed by an edict of the Federal government so you need to be posting about their kills not ours.

What's to defend?
We're conducting research, and we take less that 15 a year. In Florida, they kill between 9 and 20 thousand a year, fighting them until exhausted, mishandling them, and then feeding them to the sharks.
If you want to be pissed, other than the Florida fishery, you should be pissed at our federal government, for destroying the habitat that these fish, and others spawn on. They've been spawning on offshore platforms such as MP305 since it was put there back in the 60's. But now it's gone, they dynamited the legs, killed all the sealife around the platforms and destroyed/removed the habitat from the Gulf.
Main Pass hasn't been the same since.
BTW, the video was made in February of 1992.

...the wings are yummy. We simply make scallops out of them...
Right on mylsuhat. I'll pass along a good trick an old sponge fisherman from Tarpon Springs, FL passed on to me. If you take your Makita or Dewalt out and put a 1" hole saw in it you can just run along the wings punching out "scallops". You just rinse them and skin the little 1" rounds instead of having to break down and skin the whole wing.
