Anybody see woodcocks lately?

Woodcocks, aka timberdoodles (name jokes invited), are one of those birds that used to be abundant just about everywhere east of the Mississippi, but like almost every wild creature are much rarer than in days of yore.
I read they were still somewhat common in Louisiana and Mississippi because the environment is favorable--they can hide in the woods during the day, then hunt for earthworms in soybean fields at night.
Anybody ever see them?
I may have seen one once.

They have migrated north for breeding. They will be back around next winter. Their numbers really depend on the temps, the colder it is the more that migrate south...

I have them on my deer lease, they fly at dusk.

Saw 2 on March 6th while turkey hunting. I thought it was late to be seeing them but I guess we had a late spring?

They move in and out, a south wind normally moved them north, even in the middle of winter. I noticed a lot of robins around that time also. There have also been a few reports of woodcock nesting in the south, though I think it is very rare...

I saw the first one I ever REMEMBER seeing a couple of months ago. My hawk tried to catch it.

Almost stepped on one this year while walking back from the stand. Heart attack level was only slightly below on busting a covey of quail when you least expect it.
Also, we always have a few around the beaver ponds where we duck hunt. I can't tell you how many almost got busted with steel shot when they fly over right at dawn.

Jumped some in BCNWR this fall. They tend to hang out in thick cover during the day, cutover with lots of vines, etc. I also see them at mother in laws at dusk flying out of the woods to the agricultural fields.
I've got several spots where they are in hunt able numbers, but a dog would sure be nice.

I definitely busted one this past duck season while catching the early morning wood-duck flight. I didn't know it was a woodcock until i found it floating in the water.

I've been birding for more than a decade and have yet to see one.
Snipes - no problem.

Where do you live? You need to go out with someone that woodcock hunts with dogs. I have been able to get some very close photos of birds on the ground with dogs. See my pic from above...

I'm in middle Georgia and spend enough time in the woods that I'm surprised not to have scared one up.
Great picture BTW.
