Countdown to the Draft - Best Picks in Saints History (1 day left)

15 days to the draft, 15th pick, 15th best picks in Saints History. (Apologies to Sammy Knight and Sam Mills who were UFA)
Just missed the cut:
Will Smith, Tom Myers and Jim Dombrowski.
#15 HOBY BRENNER, TE (1981-1993)
Was the 71st overall pick in the 3rd round of the 1981 draft by the New Orleans Saints.
157 starts with 267 receptions, 3849 yards receiving, 21 touchdowns and 1 pro bowl.
He's 6th overall in receiving yards (Just ahead of Lance Moore) and 9th in overall receptions in Saints history. He's first in Saints history in receptions and yards by a Saints TE.

He was probably my second favorite player behind Hilliard when I first started watching football. I was obsessed with running backs for a while.

Not sure if you were there, but I remember some Saints players played a charity basketball game at Berwick High School and Hilliard was there with Buford Jordan, Lonzell Hill, and a few others I can't recall. But I remember Hilliard had the biggest thighs I think I've ever seen.
Anyways, Brenner was the man. I loved watching him and John Tice play.

It's sad that he is considered the best TE in team history before Jimmy Graham. He averaged less than 2 catches a game over his career. He fell down after about 75 percent of his catches. But it is what it is. Saints were conservative during his era. But yeah, Graham will pass him up in this-his 4th year in the NFL, and he was either injured or a backup for about 1/3 of his career so far.
That being said, I liked Hoby Brenner.

Hoby was a better blocker than Henry Childs.
Also, Childs was drafted by the Falcons. I looked him up earlier.

CSB alert - in 1989 while at LSU I worked as a salesman one summer at Benson Chevrolet, and Hilliard came in to test drive a Corvette (maroon with tan leather seats) and I got the assignment.
What I remember most was that the khaki shorts he was wearing looked like they would rip apart at the thighs (think Lou Ferrigno in the Hulk).
He took it pretty easy on it on I-10, and to make small talk I asked if he kept in touch with Garry James (yes), but pretty much kept quiet beyond a reference or two to the 350 V8. My strategy to close the deal was a no-go (I half-jokingly asked if I could get his autograph on a purchase agreement), and he went on his way without talking turkey.
All around nice guy.
(Another tidbit - Sam Mills was working there early that summer, getting his feet wet in the auto dealer world).

Heyward was a 1st round pick (24th overall) for the Saints in 1988 and played for the Saints from 1988 - 1992.
Hilliard was a Pro Bowler in 1989. In Saints history, he's second all time in rushing attempts and touchdowns (39) and third in rushing yards (4,164). He also had 249 receptions for 2,233 yards and 14 touchdowns. He is third in Saints history with scoring touchdowns (53).
Heyward had a shorter tenure and made the pro bowl for the falcons
In his five years with the Saints he had 432 carries for 1,813 yards and 13 touchdowns. His longest career rush was for 73 yards. He also had 67 receptions for 488 yards and 1 touchdown.

If I'm remembering the right guy, he had to have been the slowest TE in NFL history. Dude looked like he was running in slow motion.
