so a laptop comes in the shop, owner says the screen just goes black and he cant get it back.
Ok, fairly simple, the screen or inverter has gone out most likely. At least you would think so.

the laptop works fine if you hook it up to an external monitor - and by fine i mean both the laptop screen and the external show up and function properly. but if you boot the laptop without it being hooked up to an external monitor - you will never get a picture on the screen after the windows load screen.
WTF

bios splash screen? check
windows load screen? check
windows log in screen? nope. you can hear it working but will never get the picture.

Is the display set up for external monitor? That's the best guess I have. That's some crazy aids

no it had never been on an external until it came in the shop. like i said, the splash and load screens show up just fine, its not until the system moves into the windows log on screen that it blacks out for good.

from the sounds of it you'll want to check in the control panel display settings area, sounds like the main screen is disabled, then when you plug in the other monitor it treats it as a clone of the external monitor.

Yeah sounds like there's some conflict between the what's controlling the monitor output. I know I've had issues between having Nvidia control panel and my native windows display control panel.

If you login to windows blindly from the start, does it still show a black screen?

I once borked a computer momentarily by setting my screen resolution too high for the monitor it was on. It would just show a black screen the entire time until it got hooked up to a larger monitor and the screen resolution was set back to a smaller one the original monitor could use. I know it sounds dumb and simple, but could be something to look at also.

This is why you should never take your computer to an "expert". Most of the time the "expert" will read how to fix the issue on a message board.

I'm guessing he is probably doing more research beyond just asking us on the Gaming Board.

It would be irresponsible for him to not look up solutions online. If customers could Google as well as we can for new/rare problems, they wouldn't be customers.

I would say to do the following, if you haven't already:

Completely remove the graphics card drive, delete the device in control panel, etc., and reboot.

Also do the same with the display (the LCD panel) driver and reboot. This might help rule out any settings issues or corrupt drivers by putting them all back to default.

Of course, check for function keys on the keyboard that adjust the monitor's resolution/aspect ratio via hardware. They're easy to accidentally press and possible screw up.

Another thing to try is disconnecting the laptop's LCD panel and doing a boot to desktop blindly. Then shut down, reconnect, and reboot. Maybe try it with the external monitor connected and the LCD panel disconnected as well.

What's the laptop model?

One thing I won't argue is that jcole does know computers. No one knows everything though so asking this forum with many knowledgable computer people is just fine.

havent physically removed any component yet since the lcd screen does in fact work fine - as long as its simultaneously connected to an external monitor (which can remain turned off no less).

all the kb shortcuts seem to be in order, and the control panel settings as well. nothing shows up on any antivirus scan too (hitman, avg, and malwarebytes). its an HP dv9000 - specifically the dv9417d model. ive got it running a chkdsk now so i could set it aside and move on to another project. up to my eyeballs in hardware problems right now
