Looking for some advice on picking out my first credit card
Posted by Wooly on 4/3/13 at 6:48 pm00
the amex sky blue thread got me wanting to ask the board.
looking for my first credit card to start building up my credit score. i would only be spending it on reimbursable purchases and everything would be paid off at the end of each month. would mostly be used for gas. around $500-$750 a month.
now here is where i was looking for some help. I would most like a card thats rewards are international flying miles, one that i can rack up miles and fly to south america or europe. I dont fly frequently so i dont know how the whole rewards would work.
looking for something with at least 1 mile per dollar spent and something with a low amount of miles necessary to use them.
any help would be appreciated, if the card doesnt exist then thanks for letting me know

Check out the flyertalk website, they have discussion and reviews on most credit cards

I just applied for and got my first credit card in December. I looked for a card that offered miles, but I wouldn't be spending nearly enough money to really benefit. That and I didn't qualify for a bunch of them credit wise.
I decided to go with the Discover It card. I was like you, I only use it for gas and food and pay it off right when it hits my statement. The rewards are based on different topics quarterly. January-March was restaurants, so I racked up about $20 in rewards in just 3 months. Nothing major, but will be nice to have when it grows a little.

There is also the added benefit of "security" with a credit card that a debit card doesn't offer

If it's your first card you likely wont qualify for a good rewards card. Just get whatever you can at this point and work towards getting a better one.

what is the "penfed" card?
Just got my first card as well. I was able to get the Discover It. Not great rewards, but it's a start. Ultimately, I'd like to get a Hilton rewards card.
Does anyone have thoughts on the better bang for your buck between airline and hotel rewards?

BACON is the card guru. Just listen to him.
The only advice I could give starting out is get one with no annual fee. And pay the damn thing in full every month. No exceptions.
