I can't wait for the draft because it's really going to show which direction we are going (Aminu vs. draft pick or GV vs. draft pick) and will ultimately determine which direction we go in FA.

yep...gonna be interesting.

I'm curious why you wouldn't want Pekovic. Dude is a beast and Minny already said they weren't paying him.

He is a beast, but he will play a lot of minutes. This will limit Davis' ability to play center and limit Ryno's ability to play, period. Most think Davis is a PF through and through, but I don't want to shut the door on the C possibility too soon.

Also, do we want to blow our cap flexibility on Pekovic? (I'm not up on the cap details/what the signing would do to our space). He will be expensive and is not the guy that puts us over the top, imo.

Let's make lesser signings and save our cap for the next season when Davis/Rivers/2013 draft pick are NBA savvy and ready for some playoff action.

Not to mention, NEXT offseason, we should have a better record, a pimped out arena/training facility(not sure when this is finished), and a legitimate NBA superstar. These factors, along with showing them the money, will make us a more attractive free agent destination. Making a big signing this season is rushing the re-build in a bad way, imo.

2014 is a much better free agent class, too.

A front court of Pek/AD/Ryan/Smith/Lopez would be one of the best in the league.

yes it would, but who's not getting any minutes? Lopez is on a great contract for a starter, but we'd be paying him a lot for garbage minutes in that scenario. Also, Lopez has proven he's not a garbage minutes player.

I would trade Lopez for sure. Davis should be able to play more center minutes. I know starting an Aaron Gray type seems like a step backwards, but you probably need to take a step backwards like that for Monty to play Davis and Anderson as much as he should.

I'm in favor of this as well.

It seems like most are trying to upgrade C and make it difficult for Davis to get any minutes there.

I like more minutes at C for Davis. Let's see what he can do. Losing Lopez to play Davis more is good; losing Lopez to upgrade the position and restricting Davis/Anderson to PF minutes hell is bad. JMO

I'd be willing to keep Aminu around off the bench on a cheap contract but we have to have a starter that can shoot in addition to defending. Whether that's a FA like Corey Brewer or drafting Otto Porter I guess depends on how the ping pong balls bounce.

Watching Aminu throw up air balls on half of his long jumpers is rough...It's 4 on 5 for us offensively in half-court sets.

Reason #1 is his bad rebounding. I fully expect a new starter at SF and the available SF upgrades will likely not rebound as well as Aminu.

I actually agree with this. However, if we can upgrade, Aminu and Lopez could be really useful off the bench. Are they going to be paid too much for that, though?

quote:

Reason #2 is he's terrible at defending the most run play in the league.

Playing him with Vasquez really exacerbates this flaw in both of their games. The end of the Lakers game exposed that lineup.

I agree with most of this. It's going to be tempting to blow our load this offseason, but there just isn't much talent to go around. I think we'll try to draft someone that can come in and produce. I don't think we're so far under the cap that we'll need to give out a West type contract, but I could see them overpaying (although it would be overpaying with a purpose) a bit for one more year of Aminu.

also where have you seen Oladipo as a SF? Everything I've seen suggests he is strictly a SG I mean he's 6'5" 215 right? And aren't scouts saying that Bazz is small for a SF at 6'6" 225?

I have read that he can defend all three wing positions and has some possible flexibility to play the 2 or 3 in the NBA...may be wrong.

also I dont think people should leave out Anthony Bennett I think he's got crazy potential and flying under the radar in a draft without many sure things

I really don't think he will play SF...think he will be more of a PF--the strongest position on our team.

This. He's too slow and doesnt rebound the way the team needs. His value will never be higher, take what you can get via trade. Hopefully a capped out team will trade a late first for the right to cut him.

I like Vasquez and he has had a great season, but he isnt the answer at pg. Maybe they can get better guys around him to ease his load and he continues to improve his shooting and it can work.

But watching David Lee keep up with him on switches last night was heart breaking. They need more perimeter players who can make teams pay off the dribble. He just doesnt have that ability unless he's got a smaller guy on him.

Aminu has made strides, but they need more from his spot. Playing him with Anderson means teams have the sf guard Ryno and the pf guard Aminu. They need a more skilled player there.

No real FA targets in mind, but the first priority must be to upgrade the perimeter players.

1. Porter
2. Pekovic
3. Point Guard (Quick Backup)
4. Playoffs

Or...
1. Smart
2. Brewer
3. Compete for 8th seed
4. Keep cap space until 2014 offseason

Vasquez CANNOT be a starting PG in this league. Not for us, and not for any of the other 29 teams. I like him as a person for his work ethic. But its a Tim Tebow type situation. Hard worker, loves where he plays and loves his team, but sucks at his position. Tebow isn't a good QB, Vasquez isn't a good PG. If you stop being blinded by a good stat line and actually watch how he plays, you'll see how poor he is.

Good stats reflect performance to a large degree. You are exaggerating.

His game has weaknesses, but he's not horrible.

I agree with this. We have a SF that's invisible on offense and a PG that lacks the speed and quickness to get into the lane on a consistent basis.

Good write up - I agree with most everything except Lopez. He does have a favorable contract but his lack of rebounding prowess is maddening for a 7 footer. Plus he's tough to work the offense through because his hands are made of stone.

I don't get the Vazquez hate on this board. He's been the most consistent player by far this season. Easily top 10-15 PG in this league. Unless CP3 is coming back he's the best option here.

We have to get a scoring option at SF. Opposing D's completely ignore Aminu - especially from beyond the arc. This should be the number 1 priority this offseason.

I agree with this.

I think he can be a good starter if not asked to do too much/ if he can get more offensive help from the wings.

Good shite man!.

As far as the offseason. I don't want us to rely on attracting a free agent. Not saying it won't happen. However, I want to focus on the draft. As many on the board have said, we need to acquire talent, irregardless of position. Fortunately for us, we need something everywhere, so we truly can do this. If I had a personal Big Board for the Pels it would look something like this:
1. Ben Mclemore
2.Victor Oladipo
3. Marcus Smart
4. Otto Porter
5. Nerlens Noel
6. Shabazz Muhammad
7. Anthony Bennett
8. Cody Zeller
9. Alex Len

Biggest question to me is Oladipo's actual measurements. I'd want him to play SF us, like you said, but he seems small. I don't think Mclemore's positional status would worry us. If anything it would sure up the backup back court.

Thats my main worry with Vasquez, he's gotten the taste of being the guy on offense during games this season. I feel like he might have trouble reigning that back in and deferring to others.

I don't think it's that big of a concern. Outside of the 2 games, he hasn't really been shooting too much. He does need someone else to score the ball in crunch time. If anything, I think this trial by fire this year could help him become a really solid 3rd or 4th option at the end of games. Unfortunately, our roster forces him to be #1, which he clearly isn't.

Basically, teams have learned that if they can stay in Anderson's pocket, Vasquez is almost forced to shoot in late game situations.

His rebounding is a concern. Can he still get better there? Is Aminu taking some of his rebounds? Is it a good enough reason to get rid of him? He has the size/height/shot-blocking we were all begging for in the Lakers playoff series.

Marc Gasol is averaging 7.7 RPG in 35 minutes.

Garnett averaging 7.8

Perkins averaging 5.9

...not saying Lopez is a great player or anything, just that he's serviceable for now.

This board would rather keep fricking Vasquez than Gordon. I've now seen it all
