He was a solid no-nonsense coach. We need more like him.

Sorry for Bum and his family but.....

Agony is Bum Phillips refusing to let Morten Andersen attempt a field goal against the Rams to ice your first winning season and playoff berth ... and then, minutes later, watching barefooted Mike Lansford make the field goal to beat you.

I met him my sr year of HS... he is arguably one of the nicest and most genuine people I have ever met.

I remember later guiding a hunting trip with one of his former players a few years back.. and someone at the camp telling his former player it's a shame the game passed him by... the guy made a funny look and said.. No, sir... the game did not pass him by.. the players changed....

met Kenny Stabler the same day.. was very disappointed in him... Bum I could have talked to all day - about anything... just a man's man...

It was EASILY within Mort's range at the time. Easily. He was automatic.

It was like a 48-49 yarder, and the punt was a touchback, so the punt gave the Rams like 12 more yards to gain. And as history tells, those 12 yards didn't make a difference.

Back in those days, you got the ball back at the line of scrimmage, not at the spot of the FG

Sorry to hear that. Bum coached HS football at various high schools in the Golden Triangle (Orange, Beaumont, & Port Arthur)area while I was growing up in SW Louisiana. On several occasions during my HS years I got to spend a lot of time around him. One hell of a coach, and better yet, one hell of a man.

(referring to Alabama head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, though I have also heard he said this about Don Shula) "He can take his'ns and beat your'ns and then take your'ns and beat his'ns."

There was a great story about Bear Bryant and Bum Phillip which I think was in the book Junction Boys.

When Bryant was coaching at A&M, Bum was a high school coach in Texas. He would come to some of the Aggie practices and he and Bryant would have lunch together. According to the book, they couldn't sit down long before they were using salt shakers, ketchup bottles and the like to diagram plays on the table. Definitely two students of the game.
