Indianapolis - One of New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan's problems in Dallas apparently was his complex and voluminous defensive schemes, according to Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones.

In a story on the Dallas Morning News website, Jones said "too many schemes" caused the Cowboys to remove Ryan and replace him with Monte Kiffin.

"I think Rob is a very smart guy," Jones said told the DMN. "His schemes are very sound. There are a lot of schemes. That becomes a question. We made a tough decision. We felt like too many schemes can cause problems regardless of how good they are and how sound they are. If there is more than the players can digest in this day and time - as you don't keep players for long, they move on and you have injuries - you just had to make a decision. And we made a tough one."

If this is true, I guess it's a good thing our players are already familiar with some of the concepts.

Perfect example of Jerruh being Jerruh. I get that having such a complex system in place takes time and the right players, but JJ is not a football mind. Thanks again Jerry for giving another piece (whether it's shite or not) of your organization to NOLA. We'll thank you in NJ.

We have yet to grasp that one. The guys are still working on it.

how so?

I thought the line on Spags was that he put too much on the plate for'em. Resulted in too much time thinking and not reacting and just playing football.

Most of the guys played under GW, who also came from the Buddy Ryan tree.

Again, I'm not sure how accurate this guy's statements are. Many feel that Ryan took the blame for the Cowboy's poor year. If that's the case then they have to create some sort of narrative as to why.

He got fired because he worked for a guy who thinks he's a better coach.

I think maybe the problem with Ryan and Dallas had more to do with personality and less to do with football...Ryan may not have given Garrett and Jerruh the respect the club felt he should have (specualtion on my part), but he won't have that problem with SP....

baby steps. first they must work on the general tackling scheme before they start trying to do it at specific parts of the field.

I'm with blues on this one. Doesn't mean they run same scheme or same concepts.

It's funny reading how homerism(don't think that's a word) has kicked in and everyone is blaming Jerry and the Cowboys even though Ryan has sucked everywhere he has been lol. Blues is right, the problem last year was that Spags' defense was too complicated.

Nothing about this hiring smells good to me. Someone on this board said there was also complaints that Ryan had his OLB's in coverage way too much. Also not a good sign considering the Saints want qb pressure from Tez and Junior. This guy better check his ego at the door and run the scheme that best fits the players, and not have certain guys doing things they shouldn't be doing.

It was a sharp learning curve, but the real problem was we had man coverage corners in a zone scheme and were relying on our front four to generate pressure, AND Shanle and Herring being our two starting OLB's opening day.

Yep.

I feel like I'm reading way too many red flags on Ryan though. I think it will work because we have the players that fit 3-4 defense better, and an offense that will make it so the defense doesn't have to be great. I just feel like this guy specifically has more potential to screw this up than anyone else they would have hired.

Isn't that basically what at least on player on defense said to Jackass Duncan in regards to Spagnuolo?
