Proof of why I hate this stat so much.

That makes no sense whatsoever

Why? Aminu was clearly beneficiary of sitting out for basically the entirety of the losing streak. That probably contributed to the losing streak, though, so it isn't really misleading. Starters have to play against starters and Ryno is obviously hurt by playing with the scrubs in the second quarter.

It's not necessarily a stat that shows the quality of a player, but it is certainly useful in providing a big enough sample size to see what rotations have been working. The lineup with Ryno(or even Davis) and the bench players is pretty clearly what is killing us.

what makes no sense? It's hard to to slip the "plus-minus" stat into a sentence gracefully, but you know what I mean.

That our best players have such bad +/-

I'm curious if there's a way to check PER over a stretch

+/- is a flawed metric.

I understand it is a flawed metric of measuring a players worth because it does not hold all things constant. Certain players tend to consistently play in better or worse situations.

But it is definitely a relevant statistic. It might be the most relevant one. It is literally the only thing that matters when a player is in. The problem is that it answers the questions of what is happening when a player is in but doesn't show why. You have to draw conclusions of the factors causing the team to have success or a lack thereof with a certain player in.

The team is a -4.5 point differential over 100 possessions over the season. Makes a ton of sense that the players with the most minutes would have such a terrible +/-.

Yeah, all that means is we're losing a lot of games. Scoring fewer points than our opponents, a negative +/- when they're on the court.

It's a completely meaningless stat sometimes even over the court of a single game.

No, its not. It shows where the team is losing games. It seems the guys who play minutes in rotations with primarily starters(Vasquez, Aminu, Lopez) have good numbers. It is clearly when we start getting into rotations with bench players where we are suffering.

The stat is completely accurate, often misused, and fails to really have predictive power about what is commonly viewed as good performance.

As discussed above, it is good for telling you who will get long minutes on a losing team. Others things can also tell you this.

Well I could tell you that without looking at this stat.

I think its a bad statistic and Ryno is the best example of it here. It makes it look like he is the 2nd worst player on our team, but he gets screwed because he plays with the most out of the 2nd team.

But it doesn't look as bad on guys like Roberts and Mason because their minutes are so much more llimited
