Money Board: Skeleton to Success Thread Request

I, like everyone else, read this board for a number of reasons, ultimately with the goal to learn and share knowledge in order to make sound financial decisions. Whether the individual be in the middle of crisis, or out of plain boredom, the MT provides answers. As seen in some threads, users have mentioned the need of a specific page, be it a FAQ page directed to the MT board, that acts as a MT learner's bible*. This would be a wonderful addition, unfortunately it breaks from the simplicity of having one FAQ page for all of TD.

With the introduction out of the way, we can make a thread that fits the mold for simple scenarios aimed at financial beginners of all ages, 20s, 30s, 40s, etc... Simply bookmarking the thread for future reference could suffice as our FAQ page. My goal for this thread is to get the board's opinions on what could be useful to our FAQ thread. I have three simple ideas to help stimulate the development of this desired beginner's thread, as follows:

1. Should it be a collaborate of linked threads geared at specific topics such as... How to invest out of college? How to manage debt and setting aside money for retirement?

2. Shall we have a consensus of opinions that are concise and direct answers to common questions?

3. Should we put together a voting system, that enables us to use the search function of the MT and gather a set of 3 to 5 best user posts for each topic, then vote on which post gets to be the answer? We could include a link to the posts that lost in the voting, to help provide a case for more than one reader's opinion.

If there is a thread, or threads, that already fulfill this goal, I'll be glad if it gets linked as a response, so it can be bookmarked. Otherwise, please provide any opinion on this topic. What are your thoughts? Waste of time, can be accomplished? Is your opinion of a FAQ thread very different? Can you expand on how you think we can accomplish this request?

*Unfortunately, I have no reference, so this statement originated straight out of the horse's ass.

Yes. Absolutely.

People come to this board for a variety of reasons, most of which are very very different in subject matter. Thus, I think that perhaps having one person responsible for each type of subject would be a good idea, and then all those threads could be linked together in one thread providing links to all the other individual topic threads.

The types of topics I'm thinking of are...

-- advice about loans, credit cards, business plans, etc.

-- tax advice

-- advice about interviews, breaking into certain fields, etc. (this might be split into 2 actually, one for general business / marketing / banking / accounting jobs / etc., and one for investment banking / asset management / private equity / etc.)

-- study help for standardized exams; advice on majors and grad schools; general school related questions

-- practical investing; how to value assets; investing tips recently in the news; (a list of favorite investing books & publications might go along with this one)

-- theory-based questions on monetary policy, macroeconomics, foreign exchange rates, likely impact of certain regulatory changes etc.

I think the board is small enough to where a trusted expert could be found to round up the respected opinions of everyone who knows a lot about a particular niche. I don't think there would be too much stepping on toes.

The problem is getting people to volunteer their time to this type of thing. Personally, I don't think that I would be the right person to create any of those threads. I could contribute to the theory-based topic, but BatIJ would probably be much better at making something that was both comprehensive and geared toward questions coming from a practical investing audience.

Maybe, but like I wrote above, I think the #1 problem here is going to be finding volunteers who want to put forth the effort. Most people already know who the best 2 or 3 posters are for each of these niche fields, and having any one of them actually create the thread would be the hard part.

At least that's the way I'm foreseeing things in my mind right now. I'm often wrong at reading how other people will react to things.

Great idea. I can't provide input but I'd love to read it!

Rick,

Check this thread I attempted for a base on fields.

LINK

Some people, understandably so, would not like their occupations stated.

I love the idea! We have a similar train of thought on this. Good luck and I will not be a contributor but more of a spectator.

ETA: Also, one thing I like about this board is the differing of opinions. Some questions probably have one answer, but the majority on here are complex therefore providing differing opinions. Not sure the answer but I will add some more thoughts tomorrow when I have a little more quiet time.

This would only be feasible and sustainable with a wiki format and a subset of admin-approved posters who are allowed to edit.

Thanks for the feedback! You are the one person I had in mind when it comes to starting a big thread and reserving enough space for the entirety of what you are writing.

I understand the time constraints and the extra work it will require out of all who are willing to volunteer for the effort. This is not an overnight project by any means. I think we use this thread as a platform to gauge the general interest of the MT board in this idea. Brainstorm as you have done to help determine the appropriate topics for a base thread. Create a simple model that won't necessarily please all, but maintains simplicity in its implementation.

If this idea is accepted, we can move forward on some trial runs of its development. I have only been a reader of this board for nearly a year now. The scope of my MT knowledge is based on this past year, leaving a lot of highlights on the table from years prior. And because this board has been around for more than a few years, it would not serve it justice to throw this thing together in one week. It should be well thought out, and apply to most everyone's tastes.

I will work on being more constructive in topic development in the meantime.

re: Money Board: Skeleton to Success Thread Request

It might turn out to be that way in the end. I do feel like you could accomplish the main highlights of a beginner's guide through the use of TD's thread format. It could become stale overtime with only one user having access to the thread's contents. On the other hand, if that happened, another user could copy it and further expand the base thread.

This attempt might end up just pumping sunshine up everyone's rear end who actualyl wants it to happen too.

Well we know who to antagonize in post requests

But really, to maintain the integrity of the board in an MT beginner's thread, we would need to preserve what you mentioned:

quote:

ETA: Also, one thing I like about this board is the differing of opinions. Some questions probably have one answer, but the majority on here are complex therefore providing differing opinions

We might could choose a preferred post for a topic, as long as we do not fail to include other knowledgeable viewpoints on the subject matter.
