How so?

since it is a certain amount of lanes and highway there can't by a pedestrian bridge over it. It was discussed after the student was hit by a car after one of the games

EBR greenlight plan. Do any of y'all actually pay attention?

I've driven on two lane roads just like Nicholson that don't have a left turn lane that work perfectly fine.

They could have alleviated this problem by putting green left arrows on the lights and allowed each each direction have a go straight or turn left opportunity and cycled around.

I don't know how much a light signal at an intersection costs, but they could have put that up in a day. Instead, its been on a backburner for 10 years. fricking ridiculous.

Considering the Green Light Plan wasn't implemented until 2005, I don't think it's been 10 years.

The city has been looking into a street car line along Nicholson for a long time.

Obviously, the lack of funding and the slow redevelopment of the area north of LSU are hindering progress.

The state is footing the bill for the intersection, which requires a significant change in grade. The road can't be widened without being raised because of raised tracks along side of it. Larger cars, tractor trailers, and buses already get stuck over the tracks sometimes, so a wider intersection will have to be graded away from the tracks, adding significant costs to the project.

The parish is taxing itself to widen Nicholson (a state rode) between LSU and Ben Hur. The tax was passed in late 2005 after the Katrina traffic was in town, and plans are in place to make it a 4 lane road with street parking, a raised media, subsurface drainage, and bike lanes. They are timing that road widening with the intersection improvements, which the state is dragging arse on.

Considering its been a problem since my freshman year in 2003. I'm correct.

The fact this intersection has to be a part of "Green Light Plan" is ridiculous in itself when they could have done minimal effort to at least improve the flow a little bit before doing the badly needed intersection improvements.

How can something be on the backburner before it was even planned?

You are telling me a plan has to exist before a problem exists?

This intersection was a problem in 2003. It would have taken one day to change the light system there to alleviate the issue until the intersection plan could have been adopted.

The fact you think it requires a government formality is baffling.

Here's a rough idea of what I am talking about. No turn lanes at this intersection, yet one side has a green straight and left arrow. Oncoming traffic must stop so that side can do its left turn and go cycle. You do that around the intersection and it would have bought some time. Each side getting a long cycle and a turn.

You were specifically talking about the implementation of a turn signal being on the backburner for 10 years.

Brilliant, just change something without any traffic flow analysis.

It can't get any worse or unsafe as it is now.

Sue me if you want to have it that way. What is humorous is if I accept that, the backburner is 8 years for the Greenlight Plan. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of BR local government.

Ah I see. Must be the hwy designation. Didn't think about that. I've seen pedestrian bridges over much wider roads in Texas. Figured it could help here.

And this earlier posted link says I'm right.

The project got as far as engineer selection in 2002, but was put on hold. Now, if the Metro Council approves what amounts to a paperwork formality Wednesday, the work will be a go once again.

Backburner. 10 years.

The green light plan to widen Nicholson is not the same project as the one to improve the intersection, which will be state funded. I think there is a layout plan for it around somewhere. It's not going to be an easy fix- especially if they want to keep Nicholson open during the project.

The green light projects have been actually been moving pretty quickly.

Ya, what I was saying was temporary at best, and eliminates the unsafe condition of having cars trying to scooch around left turning cars that are holding up traffic. The first step I would think, is to eliminate an unsafe condition, and that is a pretty bad one a light change could fix for now. That intersection is just terrible having a train track with that steep a grade 20 feet from it.

I'm not really trying to differentiate between state and local government here. Its not a distinction I really care about. Just the fact this intersection had engineering selection in 2002 and still hasn't been done, and that a minor change to alleviate a dangerous condition would have been nice.

But hey, maybe they considered my light idea change and that invented some other problem, but I just don't see how this intersection could get any worse (short of just blowing it up and not fixing it ) than it currently is until they do the big overhaul.

I can see how protected left turns without the turn lanes would probably address the backups on Nicholson but would aggrevate the backups on Brightside/Lee because of the longer cycles.

Even without the rail road tracks, that would be a major intersection improvement. Expect it to be mess for a year when they finally do something about it. They'll have to re-grade and pave an entire intersection while keeping it open to traffic.

The state is behind on many transportation projects. The plans are there...the funding is not.

Ya, there is no getting rid of the traffic backup, that is for sure. You can only shift it around at this point.

These railroad tracks are causing problems all over the south. I know Biloxi/Gulfport area has talked about moving them north to near I-10 for a long time, but its just daunting. These were all small inconsequential towns, arguably still are, when they were built.

I'm really excited about the redevelopment of this area and the stretch between LSU and downtown. Imagine if that stretch of Nicholson eventually resembled Magazine or St. Charles (minus the potholes).
