So we're endorsing governments having the power to do things like this in this thread?

Ironic, isn't it? I've noticed that some people can rail against oppressive government in one breath and endorse the most opressive government measures in the next, without noticing a trace of inconsistency.

ive been telling people for years we should institute some form of corporal punishment. people would think twice before committing crimes and we would save a shite load of money on jails and prisons. if you commit violent and outrageous crimes i think you forfeit your right to be treated humanely... you want to reduce crime in inner cities? throwing criminals in jail is a vacation to some of them.. they get out and become repeat offenders. start cutting off limbs and that crime number will drop drastically. gang bangers arent so tough with a stumps for arms... advanced civilizations have been doing it for thousands of years... give me one good reason we should not implement something like this

1. Because we're not savages. 2. Because governments have been known to imprison innocent people in the past and will do so again in the future. 3. It is wildly inconsistent to bitch about the oppressiveness of government, then endorse the most draconian punishments in public forums.

I say we take it one step further...why not stone rape victims to death for tempting men? Seriously, I have spent some time in the middle east and I assure you there is nothing, and I mean nothing, in the region that we should emulate. If you ever find yourself admiring anything about the Middle east or Sharia law in particular run, do not walk, to the nearest mental institution and insist that they immediately apply massive loads of electroshock therapy until the madness is forever banished from your system.

It's too easy to be Billy the Internet badass for some people. I really can't believe that people would endorse giving the govt this much power to ruin your life. What if I stole something so trivial as a 75 cent newspaper? Do I deserve to have my hands cut off for that? If somebody answers yes, then that person is a fricking loon.

The only time capital punishment should be used is in cases that are beyond all doubt, reasonable or not. And it should only be used in those instances to replace a life sentence in cases where the person is such a danger to society that they should never be let out of prison. In other words, murders who are caught in the act. Our prison system is broken, but this would be a massive step back in evolution.

Sure. Draconian describes punishment for crimes. Harsh punishment for small crimes. It says nothing about individual freedoms other than the results of conviction of a crime.
