dear fricking god
beta opened this weekend. havent found any SC4 vets that really like it. this isnt an sequel, its a reboot. and while i dont have a problem with most of the revamped features (such as electric and water being integrated with roads), the game suffers from three major flaws.
1) always on connection to EA. there is no offline play even for private regions.
2) no god mode. no major terraforming tools, no money cheats to sandbox, all resources tied to the region and apparently to the global economy.
3) the entire city/region dynamic is terrible. your city size is TINY. and by tiny, i mean equivalent to 2km square i believe. any tile with a central business district looks absurd because it will go from CBD to open space nearly immediately.
further, you apparently only have one central "highway" for the region, and each city tile only gets a single connection to this highway.
to make matters worse, each city tile is spread out from one another, not integrated next to each other as in SC4.

Well, at least my wallet can be happy. I was looking forward to this because I played it when I was younger. But in all honesty, there are a ton of huge games coming out this year, some soon in fact, and if this isn't gold I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it.

I don't like #2 and #3, but I can deal with those.
The whole always on connection just shits on the user. What happens when the servers go down/shut off? Traveling without wifi?

better yet, what happens when the shut down the servers due to cost considerations.
this game is a DLC pusher as it is, so a user with all the bells and whistles will have at minimum $100 invested. just to rent for a couple of years?
frick i hate EA. ruined the best video game company around.

final for SC2013 vanilla. may be added in some sort of DLC in the future, but it wont be included in this game per game dev Q&A session several months ago.
i understand they wanted to fundamentally change the game (hence going to glassbox for the simulation) to simplify the game and broaden its appeal, but that could be done within the SC4 style region play. i dont understand why they turned their backs on that part.

the poll thats up on a(the) major SimCity fansite has the current breakdown:
Have pre ordered or WILL buy: 214
Will not buy at all or will not buy without major changes (mainly to the problems outlined in the OP): 313
id call that a massive failure on EAs part.

There was a reddit AMA with EA devs about this a month or so ago where there was a huge backlash. I'm surprised they're sticking to their guns.

if you like sandboxing then absolutely. pick up the rush hour edition and then head over to simtropolis and pick up the network add on mod and check out their giant collection of user made mods/lots/etc
fairly amazing there is that much modding going on for a 10 yr old game

One of the few games I'd consider paying full price on because of how much time you can put into it. Looks like I'll keep playing Simcity 4 for now.
