| Juvenile killing an endangered species? (Posted on 1/21/13 at 1:38 pm)
What sort of penalty does this carry? My buddy hank told me his son didnt know what it was qnd shot one. I know the right thing to do is report it but Bobby is only 12 years old and he's not quite right. I would feel bad if it really affected his life negatively because it was a mistake. The bird was a whooping crane if that makes A difference

You need to report it, and also tell your son to know what he's shooting.

Uh yeah that makes a huge difference. The trouble will be life changing. I wouldn't want to even know about that. If that was my kid I'd bury that bird so deep it would never be found and pound the shite out of him till he understood to truly never again bring that up to anyone. Ever.

If the boy aint quite right he shouldn't be unsupervised with a gun. Same goes for him shooting something he doesn't know what it is

A fella here in Florida killed a Harlequin duck in 2011 and brought his cool looking duck to a local taxidermist. The taxidermist summarily reported him to the appropriate wildlife officials. Ol' boy paid a heavy fine and was banned from hunting in the State of Florida for five years.

If he's 'not quite right', he needs more supervision with his gun. I wouldn't report it, but he needs to be taught not to shoot anything in the crane/heron/egret families.

He'd probably be in more trouble for shooting that bird than he would be if he accidently shot his dad....
