Good Deal or Bad Deal

Just picked up a Savage 110 in 243 with a Simmons 44mag scope for $250. I bought it for my grandson to use. All he had was a 20 guage single shot and I figured if he wanted something to deer hunt he needed to upgrade a bit. What grain bullet does the great OB recommend? I've heard bad things about the 85 but not having ever having been around a 243 I have nothing to go on. thxs!

Great deal man. Im sitting in the woods now with a savage. I have a savage 243 at the house also. I always shot the 100 grain out of mine. And never had a deer leave the plot! Great deal on a great rifle! Lucky grandson

I have a 243 handi rifle. Got it for the kids to use. It shoots Remington core loc 100 grain good. I've tried some others without much success.

$250 sounds like a good deal to me.

Shoot the 100 grains if you can find them.

Any gun you can purchase for $250 is a great deal to me.

re: Good Deal or Bad Deal

It was worth every cent just seeing his eyes light up when I told him to shoulder it. He has to take his hunter education class this summer so the ammo panic should be over by then. The wife wasn't as excited as I was, but she'll learn to deal with it when he lays his first deer down, which is next year I hope. We have plenty of deer where I hunt so he should get his chances. BIL bought from a cousin of his who needed some money quick and he didn't need it so I was at the right place at the right time.

Congrats on getting your grandson a sweet rifle!

The ammo panic hasn't really affected hunting rounds. It's mostly affected handgun rounds and semi auto rifle rounds, like .223 and .308, and surprisingly, 22lr.

If you can find someone that hand loads (or would like to pay me to do some 243 for you ) I would give the Barnes TTSX a try. You may be able to find these boxed in factory form already, but people have tons of success with these bullets, even if they are light-for-caliber. This one on MidwayUSA is listed at 80 grains for a 243, which is light, but the bullet is all-copper and has controlled expansion. Every review on the page is 5 star and says it had complete pass-through, which is more rare for 243.

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/594032/barnes-tipped-triple-shock-x-bullets-243-caliber-6mm-243-diameter-80-grain-spitzer-boat-tail-lead-free-box-of-50

I load these exact bullets in .260 Remington in 110gr configuration and am going test them soon. What did the deal for me was when my dad could not get a bullet to shoot well out of his 300 mag. That was, until he worked a load with this bullet. His best group was .36MOA. He took this load to Montana for a big game hunt and took 2 bulls, along with 1 big mule deer. It delivered the kind of performance he was looking for, since all the shots were around 300 yards.

Yea I'd go with the 100gr. The 85gr seemed to be more of a varmint round when my brother shot them. (Actually the ones he got were varmint rounds and that's probably why the sucked for deer)
