Hello all. What is the rule (money spent) for purchasing an engagement ring? Good looking out....

How much you can reasonably afford.

The 3 months salary rule is outdated, and I suspected made up by the jeweler industry.

Engagement rings are highly overrated. I paid $1700 14 years ago and thought that was too much, but I thought it was a great deal.

Just go with what feels reasonable to you and your money situation, but if either you or your wife think you have to spend a certain amount to not look poor, you are going to probably have bigger problems down the road.

The most I could see me taking credit for a ring is 1500-2000.

And that is on a high dollar ring.

Just buy a simple couple hundred dollar ring.
If it's the right girl, she won't care.

You can't get a ring for a couple hundred dollars.

hate to sound cheesy, but if she's the right one, she's going to care more about the time, thought, and effort put into it than the total cost or how many carats the center stone has.

don't buy something because "society" says you have to pay x amount for a ring. Depending on your financial situation that can be very stupid.

You shouldn't be starting your life together straddled with debt

This is bull shite.

Sure, she will be happy if it is all you can afford, but if you go cheap and you don't need to, she won't be happy even if it isn't enough to call the engagement off for.

so fricking stupid. its not a physics formula. its an arbitrary number made up by the masses... for an item with no utilitarian value what so ever.

How much do you have in savings to spend? I don't recommmend going overboard if you can't afford it. if the woman really loves you the ring won't be a big deal as long as you get something that looks fairly nice and isn't a pawn job.

Honestly I wouldn't go over $2-3K at that if you have that kind of money. do not put this on a credit card. nothing wrong with staying in the $1k-1.5K range and upgrading later on

I'm no where near married but I'm already starting to put money away for all this nonsense...ring, wedding, house, honeymoon...

I expect to spend somewhere between 3-5K and find a good deal. So hopefully appraised somewhere in the 6-9K.
