I think it depends on what your looking to buy. Some places do certain things better than others.

Fish is what I'm looking for

For fish, if you can't get some from the water, you need to go to a seafood store. Try Schaefer's in Bucktown. The only grocery store/meat market I would even contemplate buying fish from is Whole Food, but their prices are outrageous (like $20/pound for redfish).
And stick with drum, redfish, trout or flounder. Anything else is likely imported (either from another state or country) and been frozen. Exception would be whole food, which usually has some outrageously priced but delicious looking swordfish, tuna, salmon and cod.

Go to the Crescent City Farmer's Market if you are looking for fish/seafood. Tuesdays at Uptown Square, Thursdays at American Can, Saturdays at Girod and Magazine.
