quote:agreed. i'm not a saints fan, but brees comes off as a huge douche sometimes
fellow saints fans will get mad at me here but brees kind of comes off like a douche often
I like athletes who are "real" on and off the field. humility and all that has its place, but it isn't as fun to watch.
should MJ have been more humble and less cocky? frick no, that's not who he is. he's the GOAT and he knows it.

while Adrian Peterson (whom I have a ton of respect for, so do not misinterpret me) talked about wanting the rushing record and the MVP trophy.
Link?

i'll disagree somewhat here. i always thought Earl Campbell or Barry Sanders handing it to the official and walking away was more of a "i'm better than you" gesture than actual showboating.

99 times out of 100, the only time you hear an athlete talking about wanting a personal record is when someone in the press directly asks them about it.

For the record, this is how I want players I root for to answer questions about personal accolades. Manning was asked about the MVP:
“I really have not thought about that,” Manning said. “It has been such a unique season for me personally, I really feel fortunate to be playing. I really have had an interesting year and a half and so I am proud our team is in the mix. Some of the individual records going on, on teams that are not in the playoffs, I am glad to be in this situation where we have a chance to do something as a team that is special. Anything that comes along the way individually, in my past, I have accepted those on behalf of the teams I have been on. They are individual awards, but in my opinion they have always been team awards. That is kind of how I continue to approach things.”

Just watched an interview where another reporter asked Peyton who is the MVP. Peyton just laughed and said, "I don't know. Anybody in here got a vote?" And then went to the next question. Deflect, deflect, always deflect. Leadership.

well i, like another poster, hate liars
i'd rather people just act how they are and not fake it like those guys do
Right
Guys like Brees and Manning might act like they don't care about personal records, but clearly they do.

I might also add: for QBs winning championships is somewhat of a personal goal. QBs more than any other position are judged by team accomplishments. No one cares that Brees threw for 5K yards or whatever this year on a losing team.
Winning a superbowl with 4400 yards would have gotten him a lot more credibility and staying power when people look back on his career years from now.
