So I've made this observation over several years. Every place I go seems to have its own unspoken gun safety rules to live by.

For instance, at my camp you are absolutely not allowed to have a gun with ammo in it in any way until you are in the woods, but at some camps people load their gun when they show up on friday and don't unload it until they get home on sunday (and I was even laughed at once for unloading my rifle before getting out of a stand).

Point of the thread being, anybody here in the load on friday unload on sunday group? If so, what's the point? Why do you need a loaded rifle after dark at the camp? Why do you need a loaded rifle when climbing down the stand or riding on the fourwheeler? What is your reasoning for taking that risk? It makes me nervous as hell to see somebody climbing a ladder with a loaded rifle or bouncing around on a fourwheeler with one.

Throughout the time at the camp I usually keep all 4 rounds in the magazine but none in the chamber. But when I head home I take them out

Every camp I've been had rules that said unload while getting in and out of stand and no loaded guns in/on vehicles

You must not hunt at many red dirt redneck camps

I keep 4 in the magazine all the time, but the only time one is in the chamber is when either on the stand or when I'm walking to my stand during the day in case I jump one up. I remove the round from the chamber before climbing the ladder.

I have to admit I will ride the 4 wheeler or the Stealth(I use the stealth more) with a loaded gun. I guess its cause I have had deer and pigs(mostly pigs) run out into the trail in front of me while headed to the house and I think I am doing it to get a shot off faster. I know it would only take me a second or two to bolt a round into the barrel.

My dads camp was the load on Friday unload Sunday until one of the members across the gravel road(different club) was wiping down his gun after a hunt shot thru the door and killed his hunting partner. 7mag

I load once off the bike, unload to climb in stand then reload. Reverse on the way out.

Damn

It's just so weird to me to see somebody putting bullets in the gun in the yard at the camp before they get on the fourhwheeler to ride to the stand, regardless of if they put one in the chamber or not. Even significantly weirder when they do it in the camp.

Past two camps I've been a part of there was always a loaded rifle leaned up by the door. Both camps had fields in front and you could count on a buck chasing a doe across that field every year. Of course its just guys sitting around cooking and watching football. If kids are in the camp its different. Don't ever remember any specific rules about gun safety, just up to each individual to handle their firearm safely

See for some reason that doesn't bother me when somebody is using the front porch for their stand.

Bullets in a gun in the camp drive me up a fricking wall

I am also one of those that keeps rounds in the magazine but not in the chamber when I get back to my truck/house/camp.

I hunt off of horses some too and those stay loaded the whole time we are on horses. Thats prolly another reason I keep my gun loaded while on the 4wheeler/stealth.

I would never climb up and down a stand with loaded gun.

Why not unload the gun? Seems like it would be very easy to forget to hold the bullets down in the box when closing the bolt, and unknowingly chambering a round.

I'm not trying to change anybody's ways, I'm just trying to understand the logic. I'll occasionally leave the box full and clear the chamber if I walked to my stand with my gun loaded out of laziness.

No loaded guns in our camp. Period. If you leave ammo in the magazine, it must be out of the gun. If the gun comes into the camp. Breech must be open. You no like the rules? You can quitely GTFO! No alcohol while hunting or shooting. After is ok though.

I got pissed off about it. Apparently people see huge bucks climbing down the ladder and need to be ready to shoot them

ETA: In the dark of course

That's what ours are, except it also applies to the camp yard. That was the only place I hunted until I was 15 or 16 so anything else is extremely foreign to me and really just doesn't make sense.

Don't really have a club type camp anymore. Just me and a friend on family land but when we stay up there we generally just keep one out of the chamber till hunting and keep the guns in cases in the trucks the rest of the time. But we know each other well enough that it's not an issue. If I was on a lease with a bunch of folks I didn't know, I'd want hard and fast rules about ammo and guns at the camp.

That is what a friend of mine dad said. Sadly he is not here anymore to tell if he ever shot a deer that way.
