Boooo to your last rule

Most will adhere to the no alcohol rule in order to hunt our several hundred acres of flooded green timber in east Arkansas. 50 greenheads in a morning will lessen your craving for the fire water. But...once the guns are in the cases, it's on!!!

At the old lease I'd load it before I got in the 4 wheeler and unload when I got back to camp. Nothing in the chamber until I start walking to the stand.

Buddy's place down the river w're not allowed to have ammo in guns until you get out the boat and in the woods. One of his dads friends died out there when they were in high school from grabbing a loaded .22 in the boat by the barrel and it went off, so the old guys are adamant about it. I rather it that way honestly.

Me too. So you miss getting a shot at a deer. But no horror stories to tell, it's good.

Why not unload the gun? Seems like it would be very easy to forget to hold the bullets down in the box when closing the bolt, and unknowingly chambering a round.

I know I should just quit being lazy and unload it. I wouldnt accidentally chamber a round when closing the bolt. I just dont see that happen when I am actually trying to hold them down so as not to load one in the chamber.I know my ammo will be with my gun if they are still in the magazine.

I know my excuses are not valid. They are just bad habits.

Same here.

I'm one of the very few people I know who has been shooting his whole life and still gets apprehensive around loaded guns.

Since I had an accidental discharge last year, bullets in the gun out the stand drives me crazy. It would be soooooooooo easy to accidentally chamber a round when you close the bolt.

I'm not here to call anybody lazy or anything. That's just the only reason I personally ever do it. I didn't know if other people were doing it because they think they might see a deer at any given second or if they're lazy or what. I've never asked anybody I knew because when I see it happen, it's always everybody there doing it except me.

Seems like people who hunt together seem to share almost the exact same safety habits as those around them.

No loaded guns in camp. Cased guns on the way to the stand. That way there is no question.

re: Gun safety at the deer camp discussion
Made my first hunt with my 30-06 sat morning and it hasn't been unloaded since. It stayes locked in my truck until I leave for the stand I sling it across my back for the 4wheeler ride and climb in the stand. I'm sure its unsafe but I'm lazy. I did start wearing orange to and from the stand this year so that's a step in the right direction

Good thread. I might change my ways (chamber when start walking to stand) and stays that way till I get back to the truck.

Do you carry it up the stand or use a string and rope to pull it up?

I know your not, I was saying that about myself because I cant think of a good reason as to why I dont completely unload the gun while on the 4wheeler.

My brother was just puting a new Timney trigger in his 270 WSM the other day and had a round in the barrel that he didnt know about. Loosened off one of the screws to take the old trigger out and POW, shot a whole in the brick wall in his brand new house. Luckily he was the only one home at the time and nobody was hurt.

re: Gun safety at the deer camp discussion
I would recommend at least unchambering the round before you climb up and down the ladder.

I had a rifle which I thought was 100% perfectly functional go off in my lap when I touched the safety before. It was pointed out the side of the stand into the woods and hit a tree about 50 yards away, but I could have easily killed myself or someone else.

A deer isn't worth shooting yourself or someone else for.

No its a different one. The one I was having problems with is going to a gunsmith. I carry my rifle up on my back not just on my shoulder

No that gun scared the shite outta me. Even loaded and on safety I was scared it would go off any time I moved the safety on it or tried to unload it.

I typically chamber a round when I leave the camp and unload it when getting into the stand, then load again. If I am hunting in the evening, the gun is always unloaded when I can't see anymore.
