I took my little girl duck hunting for the first time today. She had a blast! We hunted some flooded timber and I put her on the jerk string. I thought she might enjoy it more if she was taking part and not just spectating. She did great. We only killed one mallard though. Birds started coming in good when the sleet started , but we didn't have a raincoat for her and she'd done got a case of the cold toes.
What are some more good ways to keep her involved in the hunt or is she stuck with the jerk string for now? Oh and anybody know any good hunting rain gear for kids ? Here's the boss at work

Jerk string is a great idea. You can get one of those shaker feed calls and a 6 in 1 whistles as well.
If the timber is private, maybe build a small platform to get her out of the water.
Congrats on the new hunter.

Get her a gun and get her on some clays this off season. I got my woman interested by shooting clays...she doesn't like to go with me bc we dont have birds and she doesn't get to shoot, lol

That's just the leverage I need to get her on board for paying for a lease next season

Yeah its a lease. So I will definitely be building a couple blinds for us to get out of the water and weather a little bit

Plenty of snacks and warm clothes. Teach her to blow a whistle. Get her face covered so she can watch the ducks work.

Precious kid. Love her smirk, it's cute yet a little attitudinal- good mix.

First thing, be dam sure she's dressed appropriately to stay comfortable. No better way to lose her forever than for her to get miserably cold, wet, or both.

Her boots look like they're about to take on water. Shame on you pops.

I sure hope they don't take on water considering she's wearing waders haha!

I've been wanting to take my soon to be 6 y/o with me, but I hunt in the marsh and have a pretty good pirogue paddle to get there. Just a little too dangerous for my liking right now.

Cute girl.

I'm with you there. No way i put my 6 year old in a pirogue. We would be wet in 15 seconds!

Don't do what my dad and a friend's dad did. They took us to Stuttgart for my friend's birthday. Haven't been on a duck hunt like that since.

I still go every now and then, but it's tough to get excited about going for me.

Seeing everyone's hunting pictures with their kids just makes me want to have a kid so bad

Made my day when I read the thread with the guy who killed his first deer and his daughter was saying "daddy! you got him!"

Meh, I want grandkids without having to have kids. I was an expensive little frick, I'd rather pay for 300 acres of hunting land than a kid

You're doing it right. The biggest mistake you can make is trying to get them to shoot too soon. It'll make em develop a flinch.

Yeah I've eased her into shooting. She's comfortable shooting her .223 and .243. Now I've gotta find her a shotgun to use. She handles that .243 like a champ so I'm thinking of skipping the .410 and going straight to a 20ga. She'll be able to hunt the rest of her life with a 20ga. if she likes it

My 19 year old brother waxes ducks with his 20ga. He shot skeet competitively all through high school and routinely embarrasses his 3.5" benelli shooting friend. No reason your daughter couldn't do the same. For some reason women tend to shoot better than most men when they are well practiced. He shoot black cloud close range if that means anything to you

Props on skipping the .410 it's frustrating for a kid to use it on anything other than squirrels. I view it more as an experts gun than a kids gun.

If nothing else, get some to land and let her shoot em on the water just to get some blood on her hands.

That was exactly my thinking Downshift. I took my .410 back during dove season and got skunked nearly. I can't expect her to hit with it on flying birds. I do see a couple water swats in her future though haha
