Deer hunting. How do you decide what grain to shoot?

Since ill be getting a new rifle and starting from scratch was wondering what grain to shoot. Won't be shooting farther than 200 yards and most shots will be less than 100 yards. .270 btw and will likely be shooting Rem Core-loc

Whatever it shoots the best

do some research and find out what your gun/caliber's ideal grain is.
I shoot 100gr .243 and 168gr .308 out of my rem 700s

Guess I should start with the largest grain bullet and work my way down

Not many choices in 270 is it?

I just tried a bunch if different weights. 150's shoot the best out of mine

I used to shoot 130 gr Winchester ballistic silver tips out of my .270, switched to 150 core lokts with much better results. I've never taken a shot on a deer further than 75 yds. I've never hunted an area with the possibility for more than a 200 yd shot, and most spots were 100-150 max.

A quick google showed 130gr shoots flatter and is more stable long distance in .270 than the other grains, and will kill a whitetail dead.
unless you are shooting bear or hog, 130 should be okay. try some out and see what you like best

140 gr Accubonds are a pretty good .270 bullet. I also shot some 150 gr Hornady's that were called Interlocks, or something like that. They did some pretty good damage as well.

I'd try 130s first since they are easier to find.

Barnes TSX 165 grain

I'm not a fan of the 130 silvertip's, either. I like the Accubonds. They always exited and were pretty easy to track behind, but they rarely went more than 20 or 30 yards when I was shooting the Accubonds.

Never had a deer walk with core lokt 150s. The 130 silver tips never dropped a deer in its tracks, even with a good shot. They'd go at least 40 yds or so. And blood was usually sparce.

I use to shoot 180g 30-06. Will give the 150s a try

But you can start by following manufacturers recommendations for barrel twist and bullet sizes(grs.).
They should get you where you want to go.

Alright imma hurt some feelings here.
Winchester ballistic silver tips are pure garbage. They are extremely poor performers.

then definitely take a look and see what the heaviest grain you can shoot with your rifle's barrel twist is. a heavier grain helps with hogs, the frickers are like tanks

Pretty much the same experience I had with them.
