| Screw Rotten Tomatoes overall %, what did the M/TV board think of The Hobbit (Posted on 12/22/12 at 12:02 pm)
My thoughts: It's hard for me to figure out who the people who disliked The Hobbit are. The people who have read the books or those who haven't. Probably a little of both. As expected, this relied heavily on the appendices for a good portion of the movie. It was crazy how perfectly true to the book a lot of the movie was and then on the other hand how much was changed for the benefit of making it epic. The changes didn't bother me at all, if you're making three movies than the first part of the movie had to have a villain and so they fudged on the story to make one. I would imagine a lot of people have complaints about the first ten minutes or so of the movie. I'm glad it didn't take itself too serious though. The Hobbit isn't the LOTR, and I think a lot of people were wanting it to have the exact same feel, it was the same mold, but not the same feel, but right off the bat you see it's probably not going to be. Its not a dark book and youre going to laugh at times while reading and it was nice to see it was the same way with the film. The Troll scene was perfect, plain and simple, probably my favorite part, next to the riddle sequence which is my second favorite part of the book. It was one of the true dark and eerie parts. Hearing Bilbo talking word for word out of the start of the book was great, and having the song included was even better. For me, I really liked it. There really is only a few Dwarfs that are going to get much attention, but they did a really nice job with Thorin, Dwalin, Balin, Bofur, Fili and Kili. The others didn't have much screen time. Scale of 1-10 what you got. Scale of 1-Chris brown how much did you hate i? LOTR was probably a 9 for me, this was probably an 8-8.5. Walked out of the theatre happy and not many complaints. Also, I, moving to New Zealand.

I really think the critics all gave it a negative review for two reasons: 1) The fact that Peter Jackson and the studios are milking this for all its worth by making 3 films out of it. 2) The 48 frames per second, which 90% of the audience isn't going to be seeing. It has almost nothing to really do with the story, characters, or plot. I don't see any reason besides these two that this should be in the 80s at the very least. And its a 9/10 for me. Its not as great as the Lord of the Rings, but I never expected it to be since it is my favorite film of all time. Plus it never tries to be Lord of the Rings and doesn't have that tension or scope that LotR has, but that's not a fault against the film itself.

Critics gonna critic. I loved the movie. Not really fair to compare it to The Lord of the Rings yet, not until all three movies come out and we can compare the two finished products.

I loved it, 9/10. It was more true to the book so far than lord of the rings was. I loved that there were a few songs from the book. I thought radagast was fine, and fitting the tone of the book. The addition of the necromancer plot helps, because the long absences of gandalf always bugged me in the book.

Had it great time with it, 8/10. Started off a little slow but got going and didn't want it to stop.

Critics and other ignorant dumb shits walked into that theater thinking it was going to be as epic as LOTR. The fact is, the Hobbit is not an epic. It is a simple adventure story. People who have never read the books don't understand that, and are looking like complete fools as they continue to give the film negative reviews.

I saw it last night and really enjoyed it. It wasn't as epic as LOTR, but honestly I think it might be more entertaining. Bilbo the character is significantly more interesting than Frodo IMHO, and I greatly prefer the actor to Elijah Wood.

8.5/10 I wasn't expecting it to be LOTR and I enjoyed some of the detail it went into that I kind of wish LOTR would have had the time to do. Bottom line is that I'm always down for a return to Middle Earth and this definitely fit the bill.

I liked it. I thought the orc fight/escape scene could have been cut about 5 minutes shorter, but that's just me being critical. I've never cared what the critics thought. I see movies based on what I think of the trailer and my knowledge of the source material if there is any.

I agree with everything you said iwy.

Probably no one will agree with me, but I'm not so sure I really agree with this statement after watching the first movie. Like iwy said, the Hobbit was very true to the book, and in all honesty, I think if PJ was going to do the same with the LOTR books he could have easily made at least 8 movies out of it instead of just 3. A lot was left out of those. I think PJ is giving a better treatment to the Hobbit than he gave to LOTR.

I saw the movie in 2d 24 FPS. I enjoyed it especially the beginning with the lead up to the mountain being taken. Visually it was stunning even in 2d 24 FPS. I was disappointed from the stand point of the book how they altered a couple scenes. But I understand that if they would have exactly followed the book the movie would have had some boring spots but overall I liked it and look forward to the next one.

I mostly agree with this. They altered some of the scenes but none too drastically. They added the Azog element to the movie he wasn't even alive during the events of the Hobbit. Overall they did a good job. Critics gonna hate.

I thought it was great. Most of the scenes were nearly exactly how I pictured them in my head, which was a nice treat. Good pacing and unbelievable scenery. The acting was supurb, as well. 9/10.

Honest question. Would anyone have different feelings for the movie if the LOTR trilogy didn't exist yet? And this was the first of six movies about middle earth?

I finally saw it last night and I loved it. As much as I loathed the additions to the Lord of the Rings (letting everyone know that Eowyn was the mystery soldier, the Warg attack on the way to Helms Deep, Theoden being possessed by Saruman, etc...) I really liked the additions to The Hobbit.
