nice looking Pirate!
but got a question for ya on the Noveske 8.5 barrel, any issues with velocity loss or fragmentation issues on 8.5?
was looking at the same but was told no shorter than 10.3 or 10.5 at least with 5.56

Thanks! Here is some info I found that looks to be from one of the developers of the cartridge at AAC. Very interesting stuff. This quote is from the "Max effective Range" page on the PDF:

"300 BLK from a 9" barrel has the same energy at the muzzle as a 14.5" barrel M4, and about 5% more energy at 440 meters."

Here is the full presentation 300BLK

soooo I know nobody is going to believe me but I went shooting with a buddy to sight in his rifle and shoot 1000 yards with his precision rifle and I attempted at the 1000 yard target with my AR.

I have a 1-6 Primary Arms scope BDC
16" 1/7 twist PSA Premium upper and lower
Geissele SD-E trigger
Free float handguard
bipod
55gr perfecta brass

I guessed on how high to hold and did no adjustments from a 100 yard zero. Didn't account for windage and just kind of shot. Guess what. I hit the target. I called BS when my friend came back and told me that I hit it. He said that all of his (300 win mag) were accounted for a there was one much smaller bullet hole at the very bottom. I saw it and still don't believe it. I laughed for a good bit.

Just filed my form 1.

Building a 10.5" 300BLK on a spikes lower. Supressor will come in a few months.

Arent most people using a 9" rail with 10.5" barrel to get suppressor flush with rail? Probably going with 7.62 SDN when the time comes.

Can't wait

how do you like that MI rail?

I want to swap out my rail for a thinner rail and really do like the MI rail, at least for what I can tell anyhow.

I like it a lot, very light and easy to get a nice grip over the top rail if you shoot that way. It came with two 2.5" rails that can be moved around on any of the two sides or bottom, just ordered another 4.5" rail section, BCM short vertical grip, and three-piece panel kit.

Thinking about building my first AR on my own. I've seen several lists of tools suggested/needed, but I've seen several pics that include a caliper. Is it necessary and what exactly are they used to measure when assembling an AR?

I've never used a caliper to measure anything on an AR build. Check out this guys video and it will give you a good idea on what tools are needed.

One more question. I'm aware of the debate over billet v. forged lowers and I'm leaning forged. From what i understand billet it simply a looks thing. Is this assumption correct?

What's yalls opinion of fortis rails? Picked up a 10" REV for my SBR build and its pretty cool and lightweight.

Bullit is more of a cool factor than anything. I'd love to have one, but you won't have any issues with a forged lower.
