Aren't you comparing post success lifestyles to pre-success lifestyle though?

Cash/Jones/Johnny Paycheck, etc., probably lived pretty lavish lives after they were successful.

No. Paycheck shot that guy at the height of his career and Sadler shot his foe when he was a best selling author and had a number one single.

This is a tired argument, especially on this board. I agree that the majority of what gets played on the radio these days is pure shite, but there is plenty of real country music being written and produced...you're just not looking for it in the right places. Evan Felker is one of the best songwriters out there right now, and you know why his music is so good? Because he doesn't just write like he's a good ole boy from rural Oklahoma...he really IS one. He's great because he's authentic. There are plenty more where he comes from.

As for Kenny Chesney...I personally think he's terrible. Is he rich? Yes, so apparently he's doing something right for the millions of pop country fans out there. However, I would never call him a great songwriter. A lot of his best songs were written by someone else. Anyone can sing a song. The power is in the lyrics and the music.

Here's the real, original, BEST version of a Kenny song (written by Bruce, performed by Charlie, ruined by Kenny):

Charlie Robison- El Cerrito Place

This reminds me of another thing that the majority of these older generation megastars have in common. Once they gain they gain their success, and have no financial worries, they seem to lose their creative edge, and the quality of their product goes downhill. Granted, much of it is/was driven by record label marketing, but it seems once they get on easy street, their writing turns to drivel.

I agree with this in relation to creativity. I love Jimmy Buffet's old music but since he became wealthy beyond belief I cannot relate to hsi songs anymore. He now sings about flying around in the private planes that he owns and other superfluous crap that has no depth or soul.

If by best you mean his hits on the radio then yes.

Some of the best music Kenny has made is on the "Be As You Are" and "Lucky Old Sun" albums. Songs that were not released as singles.

I like some of Chesney but I gained a lot of respect for him when he played a make up concert for one that was rained out here - had to stop a few songs into it because of lightning. He came back 15 days later and according to one of the venue admin guys, Chesney spent almost a $1 million to truck everything back and play the show. Not just his regular set but extra and played 40 songs.

01 Something Sexy About The Rain
02 She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy
03 Live Those Songs
04 Summertime
05 Beer In Mexico
06 Keg In The Closet
07 Out Last Night
08 Big Star
09 No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems
10 I Go Back
11 Anything But Mine
12 Down The Road
13 Me And You
14 There Goes My Life
15 Living In Fast Forward
16 Young
17 Never Wanted Nothing More
18 Back Where I Come From
19 Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven
20 When The Sun Goes Down
21 Don’t Happen Twice
22 Jack And Diane

Encore:

23 Take It Easy
24 Gimme Three Steps
25 Dixieland Delight
26 The Fireman
27 Last Dance With Mary Jane
28 The Joker
29 Three Little Birds
30 Blister In The Sun
31 With Or Without You
32 Rocky Mountain Way
33 Sweet Home Alabama
34 You Really Got Me
35 Hurts So Good
36 You Never Even Call Me By My Name
37 Ice Cream Man
38 Old Blue Chair
39 Please Come To Boston
40 Take It To The Limit

The song sucked when Robison did it so it's a push to me. "I've been looking for ya baby/I've been looing for ya baby/I've been looking for ya baby..." Wish he'd find the bitch and shut up

Haha! It's always funny to me when people who are outnumbered exponentially (based on millions of tickets & albums sold) actually suggest it's the majority who are wrong.

Thank God for Kenny Chesney and his awesome talent & foresight into country music. He was able to carve out a niche for himself and bring something fresh and innovative, not to mention bring millions of new fans, into a genre of music that was old, tired, stagnant, and dying. He must be doing lots of things right because decades later, he's still cranking out number one hits and selling out football stadiums, which no other artist of any genre can do as consistently as KC. Fact.

El Cerrito Place is a hauntingly beautiful song, now that Kenny Chesney has re-made it. He and Grace Potter show what this song should sound like. It has become a top five favorite of mine.

HEY! Don't bring females into this, Doc. I'm a woman and I don't have shitty taste in music.

To use a Kenny Chesney REMAKE as an example of what country music "should" sound like is absolutely laughable. You wouldn't have that top five favorite song if it weren't for Bruce and Charlie, who are the REAL talent. Like I said...anyone can sing a song. It's the lyrics and composition that make it powerful.

Grace Potter is the shite, though, I'll concede that point.

ArRazElle

Yes, Elle = girl

Being a female has nothing to do with my hearing or being able to discern quality music.

This "argument" is always amusing to me since the anti-KCs have absolutely no factual data to back up their unfounded claims. They can only throw out their baseless opinions of "Chesney sucks" without offering any support of their statements. If that is your opinion, fine, but it should not be presented as fact because as the saying goes, opinions are like assholes, everybody has one.
