Shia can be a fantastic actor. I think he was just hindered by being in so many massive budget, studio films that don't allow for a huge display of acting chops.
Great in Lawless. Great in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints.
He may not be better than Gordon-Levitt, but he's certainly talented.

I don't know who JGL is (I'm old and just figured out who DDL was), but anyone who chooses a screen name of Shia La Beouf cannot be taken seriously as a man.
