| Valve will release its own console-like PC for the living room (Posted on 12/9/12 at 8:40 am)
Looks like they are going to go head to head with the next gen systems. If the price of next gen systems are as high as projected, and this Steam PC is able to upgrade hardware over time vs consoles, then I think this will be a strong competitor to both. Most newer PC games are able to use controller too so that's a big plus for traditional console gamers. Also, I like being able to download Triple AAA games the minute they release if I want to. PS and Xbox really need to look into that option for consoles.

Valve has stayed mostly quiet about its plans to enter the hardware business, but in an interview with Kotaku at last night's Video Game Awards, Gabe Newell confirmed the company's plans to sell its own living room PC that could compete with next-generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft. The biggest revelation is that Valve seems set to release its own complete hardware and software solution. When we first reported that the company was working on a "Steam Box" back in March, it appeared that Valve was working on a prototype that would establish a baseline for hardware manufacturers, but it wasn't clear if the company would sell its own product or simply release the designs to others. Newell's comments to Kotaku provide a much clearer picture of what's happening; Newell said that he expects companies to start selling PCs designed for the living room next year — which Kotaku says could have Steam preloaded — and that Valve will create its own distinct package.

PS3 has this, it's called Day One Digital, not sure about Xbox. Hitman, Far Cry 3, AC3, all EA Sports games, etc. Midnight downloads on release.

I never turn on my PS so I had no idea they finally started doing that. Xbox doesn't offer it. ETA: I do know the "sales" Xbox has suck arse compared to Steam though. That's another thing about the Xbox marketplace that I never cared for. Again, I don't use my PS much to know what their sales are like.

Yeah, had it since the summer or so. I got NCAA '13 and NHL '13 digitally at midnight. Almost got Far Cry 3 but feel like it's more of a rent, was literally at the checkout screen.

I know some people like having a hard copy but I never trade games in anyway and I like being able to access everything from a menu vs having to sort through my physical copies. It's just more convenient.

I can't decide whether this will be a good or bad thing for PC gaming. I guess it comes down to what sort of specs the steam box will have and how much market share it can take from microsoft and sony.

Wait, I can buy Far Cry 3 without having a disc? I knew I could download the games to an Xbox, but I needed the disc as a sort of key to access the game. PSN has digital downloads that I don't need the disc?

I heard about this about a month ago...we'll see how it goes. Hopefully it doesn't hold back pc game development anymore than consoles already have.

I was reading that Newell wants to bring the Linux platform to this thing? Or did he want to develop on Linux in general.

Last i heard, the next generation consoles(xbox720?), were actually going to be in the $300's. And you could upgrade them for more money. but, as always, till its out and a price is set, we wont know. I thought the article i read, claimed, with competition coming, they wanted to keep the price at a lower starting point.

linux in general. He has the hate for windows 8. He wants all the games on steam to be compatible with linux. Also, Nvidia is fixing it's drivers for be more functional for OpenCL(or whatever linux uses). Gaming on Linux is looking a lot brighter.

They are going to have a base model steered more towards home entertainment and light gaming then a bigger system for gamers but neither one will be upgradable over time just like the current systems aren't. A Steam PC that will possibly allow you to upgrade say your vid card like you can on a typical PC now will make it have a longer life cycle and you won't be playing on 8 year old technology like PS3 and Xbox are now. Just a thought as nothing with Valve is ever straight forward but I don't see why this isn't more feasible vs a console considering the way Steam works.

I didn't know you were finally building one. You started ordering parts yet? I just want someone that plays random games like me to play with on PC. Sweat plays like 2 games and everyone else played DayZ a few weeks then quit.

yeah, I'm going super cheap. amd5800k apu, you can actually crossfire it with a 6670 but nothing higher. 6670 is like 65 dollars. hahah but I'll be able to get 60fps on BF3 on medium. I'm going to start ordering parts this week. ETA: parts list. you can overclock the A10 to 5.0GHz on air but i'm not going to do that. Maybe 4.5 CPU: AMD A10-5800K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor Motherboard: ASRock FM2A75M-DGS Micro ATX FM2 Motherboard Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory Storage: Seagate Barracuda 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive Case: MSI TC- (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case Power Supply: Corsair Builder 500W 80 PLUS Certified ATX12V Power Supply

I got to get me a system built myself. All my friends are on console so I'm usually just playing single player everything but I'm playing older stuff that my laptop can handle. What are you playing right now?

E-mail me your budget and parts list. I bet we can do better than that APU/GPU combo with all the sales they have right now. You can build a good PC for $600 I have a torrented Windows 7 Ultimate I can send you the ISO file on so that saves you some money. No need for 8 just yet unless you want bugs.
