| Wine for Beef Wellington (Posted on 12/5/12 at 4:57 pm)
Every year for Christmas, my wife and FIL make beef wellington. I was hoping for some direction a good wine pairing with this. I'm leaning towards a Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Thoughts?

That would work, or a Bordeaux

With those mushrooms and foie gras, an older burgundy would work. Of course, nothing wrong with a grower champagne, Bourdeaux, or anything from the Rhone. Basically anything French.

Chateau De Beychevelle '94 is primo if you can find a bottle, but any of thier wines are generally pretty good, with the occasional bad year.

Pretty sure Wellington will overpower anything French. Sorry, bad joke.

I appreciate the military humor. Any specific recommendations on years or specific bottles for the following: Burgundy Bordeaux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Let's try to keep it under $50. Thanks.

Chateau de Beaucastel is under 50 and probably the best option. Its also fairly easy to find. I dont have much exposure to Bordeaux, but there isnt much under $50 that wouldnt be better replaced by something else from say California. Robert Foley Claret would be an excellent choice but that is about $100+ a bottle. Burgundy anything with the words Clos Saint-Denis or Gevrey-Chambertin on the bottle would probably be a good match and in your price range.
