Dear Meat Flies question

After cleaning one of the deers at the camp, the meat was put in a large ice chest with some big blocks of ice in the shade. The guys ran off to the store to get bags of ice. The ice chest was not closed all the way and has a small gap. After about an hour and a half when they returned to add the ice, they opened the ice chest. Inside was about 2 dozen or so flies. It was cold in there so they were hardly moving or not moving at all. They removed the flies, rinced with few gallons of water, added the ice, and said will rinse the meat with the hose pipe when they get home, and then add fresh ice.
Did the flies harm anything? This was the debate this weekend. I say no. too cold for the flies inside. Worse things have been on the meat before it can get a good rice and rub down. Urine, guts, etc.

I won't go into details but you might want to soak that in some salt water or something. I say this as someone who isn't really squeamish about food, but bugs on raw meat is gross, and ice doesn't actually kill anything.

I always add salt to my ice when I let the meat sit for a few days. Not sure if they do

Cooking it will kill any eggs the flies laid. Freezing it will do the trick also.

Would not bother me one bit.

Salt should do the trick. Eggs aren't the worry, it's the bacteria that were on that dead armadillo the flies were on that can still grow slowly even in a freezer.

it's fine unless you plan to eat it raw

Salt and vinegar in the ice water for awhile if you think you just need to do something. It'll be fine if you don't. You aren't eating it raw.

Cooking it will kill anything the flies left behind.

Flies just give it more flavor

Those flies are likely 20x cleaner than the hands on Jamarcus who fixed your whopper with cheese last week.

Probably, but it doesn't change the fact that both of them S#(% all over his food.

ever gut shoot a deer? Ever bust the blader all over the meat? It happens and a good hose pipe takes care of it.
