| Help me understand the attraction to country music (Posted on 11/28/12 at 8:24 am)
(per request) What do you like about it? Do you identify with the artists personally and the country lifestyle? Do the lyrics do it for you? I am in college and I've heard it all from growing up in Deep South AL. Aside from a couple of poppier Taylor Swift or a few Zac Brown Band songs, I just don't get it. Am I missing something? Or should I just stick to my indie rock and metalcore? (Again, this was per request...I won't ever enjoy country music, personally.)

I guess people dream of living where the green grass grows or being indian outlaws?

I don't like smokeless tobacco or pickup trucks...I'll never be one of them.

Check out some alt.country or cowpunk, or give some of the stuff in the Country-Rock thread a try: The Flying Burrito Brothers - "Wild Horses" Steve Young - "Seven Bridges Road" My Morning Jacket - "Golden" The Blasters - "Border Radio" Paul Burch - "Montreal" The Beat Farmers - "Gun Sale At The Church" The Byrds - "Nothing Was Delivered"

there's a strong strong strong difference between country of the past and modern nashville pop. eta: that was more aimed at the OP than you, Kafka, I just replied to you because I was listening to some of the stuff you posted (thanks for that, BTW)

Please do not judge country music by the artists popular right now. True music for the most part in almost every genre is dead right now in the popular forefront of media.

Pop music with fiddles isn't real country music.

I'm telling you, you're coming along at a very dangerous time for rock and roll. The war is over. They won. And they will ruin rock and roll. And strangle everything we love about it. Truer words...

Sigh... This thread again? 99% of "country" music that is played on the radio is pure shite. There is plenty of great country music being made, you're just not listening in the right places. If you heard an artist who is worth a crap, you might change your opinion.

Yes I relate to country, and so would anyone that didn't listen to that fake-twangy bull shite they play on the radio. Some of the better lyrics from any genre are country, just not necessarily the type that gets much attention. Listen to someone like TVZ or Jamey Johnson and actually pay attention to the lyrics. Anyone can relate to the emotions they're describing, not just someone that drives a jacked up four wheel drive and spends his days off at the plant fixing said truck while dipping. Townes Van Zandt-I'll Be Here In The Morning

There's lots of things along the road I'd surely like to see I'd like to lean into the wind And tell myself I'm free But your softest whisper's louder Than the highways call to me All the mountains and the rivers And the valleys can't compare To your blue lit dancin' eyes And yellow shining hair I could never hit the open road And leave you layin' there

I don't like contemporary country music, save some of the 90's stuff I listened to as a kid. However, Woody Guthrie, if you can call his music country, is a fav due to the political nature of his songs. Give him a try: Woody Guthrie - Jesus Christ
